  • La carrière de Hyacinthe Thiandoum

    Elizabeth A Foster•ARTICLE•Outre-mers•2026

  • Decolonization and the Remaking of Christianity

Elizabeth A Foster, Udi Greenberg•BOOK•Decolonization and the Remaking…•2023

In the decades following the era of decolonization, global Christianity experienced a seismic shift. While Catholicism and Protestantism have declined in their historic European strongholds, they have sustained explosive growth in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. This demographic change has established Christians from the Global South as an increasingly dominant presence in modern Christian thought, culture, and politics. Decolonization and the R…

  • African Catholic

    Open Access•Elizabeth A Foster•BOOK•African Catholic•2019•Cited by: 12

Elizabeth Foster examines how French imperialists and the Africans they ruled imagined the religious future of sub-Saharan Africa in the years just before and after decolonization. The story encompasses the transition to independence, Catholic contributions to black intellectual currents, and efforts to create an authentically “African” church

  • Kalala Ngalamulume. Colonial Pathologies, Environment, and Western Medicine in Saint-Louis-du-Senegal, 1867–1920

    Elizabeth A Foster•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2015

This book is a closely researched case study of the interplay of disease, environment, colonial medicine, and colonial rule in Saint-Louis, Senegal, between 1867 and 1920. Saint-Louis was Senegal's most important colonial settlement until it was eclipsed by Dakar at the turn of the twentieth century. It was the colony's capital, and briefly the headquarters of the Government General of French West Africa. As the author notes, the city was home to…

  • Entirely Christian and Entirely African’

    Open Access•Elizabeth A Foster, ELIZABETH FOSTER•ARTICLE•The Journal of African History•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 16

This article examines the activism of militant Catholic African students in France in the 1950s. Largely left out of the historiography of the period, they developed a unique perspective on Africa's future, informed by their dual (and often fraught) identity as Africans and Catholics. They undertook a strident campaign to convince French Catholics and the Church hierarchy of the necessity of decolonization, trying to change the Church from the in…

  • Decolonization and Religion in the French Empire

    Open Access•Giuliana Chamedes, Elizabeth A Foster•ARTICLE•French Politics Culture & Society•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Scholarly attention to decolonization in the French Empire and beyond has largely focused on the political transitions from colonies to nation-states. This introduction, and the essays in this special issue, present new ways of looking at decolonization by examining how religious communities and institutions imagined and experienced the end of French Empire. This approach adds valuable perspectives obscured by historiographical emphasis on French…

  • Faith in Empire

    Elizabeth A Foster•BOOK•Faith in Empire•2013

Faith in Empire is an innovative exploration of French colonial rule in West Africa, conducted through the prism of religion and religious policy. Elizabeth Foster examines the relationships among French Catholic missionaries, colonial administrators, and Muslim, animist, and Christian Africans in colonial Senegal between 1880 and 1940. In doing so she illuminates the nature of the relationship between the French Third Republic and its colonies, …

  • A Mission in Transition

    Elizabeth A Foster•CHAPTER•In God's empire•2012

This essay uses the experiences of Joseph Faye, the first prefect of the apostolic prefecture of the Casamance and the first African elevated to a position of authority in the Catholic Church in Senegal, as a window into how French missionaries confronted the “decolonization” of the church in the empire. It also reveals how institutions with their own particular histories and identities, such as missions, schools, or the military, confronted the …

  • An Ambiguous Monument

    Elizabeth A Foster•ARTICLE•French Historical Studies•2009•Cited by: 2

This article explores the conception, construction, and consecration of Dakar's cathedral of the Souvenir Africain between 1910 and 1936 and charts the evolution of the project in the context of religious and political “tensions of empire” in Senegal and in France. The Catholic mission of Senegambia billed the project as a patriotic memorial to the French who had died colonizing Africa and, after World War I, to all the African and French troops …

  • "Rethinking "Republican Paternalism

    Elizabeth A Foster•ARTICLE•Outre-mers•2007•Cited by: 1

This article revises the dominant view of William Ponty, Governor General of French West Africa from 1908 until 1915. Scholars have portrayed Ponty as a republican idealist who tried to implement a particularly republican vision of French governance in West Africa. In doing so, they have reproduced an image that Ponty carefully cultivated in order to advance his career. This piece demonstrates that Ponty was really a pragmatist, as well as a shre…
