Filial Dependence and Autonomy in the Sturm Und Drang
The essay examines the representation of relationships between children on the cusp of adulthood and their parents in dramas by Friedrich Maximilian Klinger, Heinrich Leopold Wagner and Friedrich Müller (known as ‘Maler Müller’). It positions the Sturm und Drang in dialogue with the wider European Enlightenment, and especially with Rousseau's theorising of human dependence in his Discourse on Inequality and Emile . In particular, it suggests that…
Introduction
Sophie Von La Roches Zeitschrift Pomona Für Teutschlands Töchter Und Der Literarische Markt Der 1780er Jahre Im Lichte Unveröffentlichter Briefe
This article presents an edition of letters by the readers of Sophie von La Roche's journal Pomona für Teutschlands Töchter (1783–4). In the introductory commentary, I examine the extent to which the letters provide evidence of women participating actively in the literary market as readers and writers and consider how far the correspondents were constrained by ideological discourses of the period. The article demonstrates how La Roche's interacti…
Die Unverhoffte Wirkung’
The article analyses the connections between revolutionary violence and the motif of the idyll in Heinrich von Kleist's works. It investigates Kleist's reworking of the newly developed form of the domestic idyll, which had originally served as a means of celebrating a progressive bourgeois milieu, but which was subsequently deployed as a bulwark against the instability arising from the French Revolution. Kleist's stories Die Verlobung in St. Domi…

Religion, Power and the Instablity of Performance in Heinrich von Kleist's Stories
Starting with an analysis of Kleist's early letters, this article examines scenes of performance in his literary œuvre . In particular it draws attention to religious settings as a privileged site for Kleist's investigation of human self‐representation in a social context, but argues that Kleist's religious officials behave little differently from his other figures. It argues that while his early letters are inspired by Rousseau's critique of the…
Hermanns Schlachten
This article investigates treatments of the ‘Hermannsschlacht’ motif in the long eighteenth century, focusing particularly on works by Johann Elias Schlegel, Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock and Heinrich von Kleist. In particular, it considers how these authors represent the relationships between gender, culture and the German nation in their plays. It is argued that the development of the ‘Hermannsschlacht’ motif is not driven primarily by a search …
Action, Communication and the Problem of Form
This article offers a fresh examination of J.M.R. Lenz's proposals for military, economic and social reform on the basis of unpublished sources. It charts the emergence of Lenz's reform proposals from his experiences in Strasbourg and his work on the play Die Soldaten. His interest in reform was arguably not a departure from his work from the early to mid-1770s on moral philosophy, theology, literature and aesthetics. Indeed, the moral and social…
