  • The Exiles

    Open Access•Charmian Brinson•ARTICLE•German History•2020

It was an ingenious idea of Daria Santini to focus her study of anti-Nazi exiles in London in the year 1934: by that year many members of the cultural, political and intellectual elite of Germany and Austria had seen the necessity of fleeing from Nazism and had arrived in Britain, but the refugee population had not yet reached the overwhelming numbers experienced by 1938/39. This enables the author to focus on some of the better-known figures wit…

This paper considers the final literary publication in British exile of the London‐based Free German League of Culture, Kleine Sammlung 1946: Gedichte, Erzählungen, Reproduktionen . Appearing at the point when many political exiles were awaiting permits to return to Germany, this collection of short literary works by eleven writers sets out its aims as twofold: it was conceived as the FGLC's first anthology for readers in Germany as well as their…

Charmian Brinson, Marian Malet•BOOK•Exile in and from Czechoslovakia…•2009

This volume focuses on a previously under-researched area, namely exile in and from Czechoslovakia in the years prior to the Second World War as well as during the wartime and post-war periods. The study considers, firstly, the refugees from Germany and Austria who fled to Czechoslovakia during the 1930s; secondly, the refugees from Czechoslovakia, both German and Czech-speaking, who arrived in Britain in or around 1938 as refugees from Fascism; …

This paper looks at some of the German‐speaking women exiles — political, intellectual and racial — who took refuge in Britain between 1933 and 1945 and the reception and conditions they experienced there, both before and after the outbreak of war. This includes a discussion of the changing employment for women as well as the internment of women in wartime. In addition it considers the policy of the refugee organisations (principally the Freier D…

  • The Gestapo and the German Political Exiles in Britain during the 1930s

    Open Access•Charmian Brinson•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•1998

This paper considers some of the ways in which foreign propaganda and espionage were organised by the National Socialists and the methods employed by the Gestapo abroad against their opponents. In particular, it looks at the workings of the Gestapo in Britain as illustrated by the case of Hans Wesemann, who managed to infiltrate both Socialist exile and progressive British circles in order to report back to Germany on the anti‐Nazi activities he …
