Remnants of the past were unearthed and vestiges of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) dismantled, as the city struggled to redefine itself in the historic city centre. This essay focuses on the Schlossplatz, a site of contentious debate about its appropriate use and aesthetic and architectural construct. The approved design is the façade of the Berlin City Palace, w…

The city's topography provides ample examples of the multiple remnants of the past, which are visible not only in the city's architectural heritage, but also hidden beneath the city's barren spaces. Whereas others have investigated the architectural and archaeological dimensions of the rebuilt Berlin, I focus …

What does it mean to treat a dream as a censored text? Why does Freud turn to the realm of politics when attempting to describe dreams and forces that shape them? What happens to the concept of when it enters Freudian discourse? Is its political significance lost in translation or does Freud's borrowing render enigmatic what we thought we understood under the name of censorship and under the name of borrowing? In Writing Through Repression, Micha…
