Paisaje pegajoso/Sticky sororidad Crónica
This crónica is really the first time I’ve written about my childhood. As I’ve noted elsewhere, I have many black holes—up to my early teens, when things sort of snap into focus. Hi-res focus, even. Although I’ve lived in and visited a number of countries whose cuisine is imprinted in my memory and even my day-to-day practices in southern California, I decided to focus on only one place: Zapopan (Guadalajara), Jalisco, México, where I spent summe…

After 'The Turn of the Screw' / Life’s a Peach Crónica
Hace unos días, I watched “The Turn of the Screw.” Esa famosa versión I’d fetichized for years. Décadas, actually. Years ago mi estudiante Sasha Fariña (creo recordar que she was a CMC science student, enrolled in my Latin American poetry seminar) fisgó en el internido y teorizó que it had actually been a TV special. Me acuerdo que that didn’t sound right to me, and I let it drift back down hacia el ether del olvido. Pero después de trabajar todo…
Black Holes—Deshielo Crónica
Susana Chávez-Silverman is a Califas-born U.S. Latina writer and flaneuse who (against all odds) is also an educator, although she mostly laments what’s happened to la cacademia over the last decade or so. She still finds joy and hope in being la High Priestess of SLOW to her students and former students, some of which are among her closest compinches. Of the two crónicas included in this special curated issue of cultural works in PORTAL under th…

Cuando vi el headline ayer, de una nota de la escritora Joyce Maynard en la Travel section del New York Times (diario que—a contracorriente—I’ve recently started taking los domingos), “Where Pablo Neruda Lived and Loved,” and especially when my eye scrolled down to the words donde la autora explica que está en Tsile con su marido Jim, queriendo dedicar “some time to our Spanish. That, and romance,” confieso que mi primera reacción fue un giant ey…

The Artist in/and Me Crónica
This crónica is an homage to a former love, Juan Muñoz Torregrosa, whom I knew in Madrid, when I was in high school. It is a very personal piece, written shortly after I’d begun to access memories of my time with him, with the help of my sister Sarita. As I recount in the crónica, through my sister’s cyber-sleuthing, we found out that Juan had become an internationally-renowned artist. Sadly, we also learnt of his untimely death in 2001. Thus, th…
Axolotl/Bichos Raros Crónica
In this crónica, I pay homage (and talk back to!) one of my favourite authors, Julio Cortázar, who I had the great privilege and pleasure of befriending in 1980, when he was a visiting professor at UC-Berkeley. I have been obsessed with time-travel, doubling, and interstitiality since I was very young; even the most casual Cortázar reader (if such a thing is possible) will immediately recognise these as recurrent themes in his work. Here, faced w…

Diary Inside/Color Local Crónica
Hmmm. Quizás abrir con algunos de estos diary entries. These fragments of “me.” (LITTLE EYE: commune con tus Musos). Mi instinto me dice que it’s as good a way in as any, si bien un poco nel mezzo del camino (pero quizás por esto mismo, no?). Estos entries constituyen un modo más directo, a more ostensibly unmediated way (ja ja) to access, to convey la tremenda carga de intensidad y de reconocimiento de estos meses aquí en el Montalvo Arts Center…

Oda a la ambigüedad Crónica
“Oda a la ambigüedad Crónica” is part of a short series of meditative, playful and sensual texts Susana wrote as a contribution to the series of research and creative symposia on Regimes of the Senses, housed at the Institute for International Studies, UTS, which began in 2006. The chronicle will also be included in her next book project, Letters a los Musos: Scenes from la Cuenca de Los Angeles y otros Natural Disasters
Killer Crónicas
Flora y fauna crónica (Flora & fauna chronicles)
“Flora & Fauna Crónica” is from the book, Killer Crónicas, which will be published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2004. This collection of chronicles began in 2000, after Susana was awarded a fellowship by the US National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for a project on contemporary Argentine women's poetry. She spent thirteen months in Buenos Aires where, in addition to research and writing on her official (academic) book, she began …
Reading and Writing the Ambiente
In this dynamic collection of essays, many leading literary scholars trace gay and lesbian themes in Latin American, Hispanic, and U.S. Latino literary and cultural texts. Reading and Writing the Ambiente is consciously ambitious and far-ranging, historically as well as geographically. It includes discussions of texts from as early as the seventeenth century to writings of the late twentieth century. Reading and Writing the Ambiente also undersco…
