This article seeks to analyse, comprehend and apprehend the appropriation processes of Ovide Decroly’s ideas in Brazil through the translation of his books and that of Amélie Hamaïde into Portuguese. The article discusses the following questions. Why did Brazilian intellectuals and teachers need to import Decroly’s ideas to be applied in Brazilian schools? Did the translation of Decroly’s and Hamaïde’s books play an innovative role in Brazilian s…

  • Jean Vigo’s Zéro de conduite and the spaces of revolt

Bruno Vanobbergen, Ian Grosvenor et al.•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2014

In this article we will contribute to the contemporary theoretical debate about film by considering, from a history-of-education perspective, the film Zéro de conduite by Jean Vigo (1905–1934). This film is classified under the umbrella of “poetic realism”: a product of cinéma de gauche and an avant-gardist, surrealist and anarchist-catalogued film by a film-maker described by many as very talented and creative. The paper is divided into five par…

  • Visualising disability in the past

Patrick Devlieger, Ian Grosvenor et al.•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2008•Cited by: 4

In recent years there has been a growth in interdisciplinary work which has argued that disability is not an isolated, individual medical pathology but instead a key defining social category like ‘race’, class and gender. 1 1 See, for example, Catherine J. Kudlick, “Disability History: Why We Need Another ‘Other’,” American Historical Review 108, no. 3 (2003): 763–793. Seen in this way disability provides researchers with another analytic tool fo…

The works of the Belgian neurologist and educationist Ovide Decroly (1871–1932) extended over the medical and pedagogical fields as well as both the practical‐professional and the theoretical‐disciplinary fields. For this reason, Decroly seemed to be a suitable starting point for a contribution to the problem outlined by Hofstetter and Schneuwly of “the birth and development of a disciplinary field in education”, all the more so because they prop…

Open Access•Marc Depaepe, Frank Simon et al.•ARTICLE•History of Education Quarterly•2003•Cited by: 6•References: 7

If any Belgian educator belongs to the canon of the New Education, it is certainly Ovide Decroly (1871–1932). Particularly in southern Europe and in many Latin American countries, the ideas and the work of this French-speaking Brussels doctor have been inspirational for a movement that projected itself worldwide—albeit in different modes—as the “child-oriented,” “progressive” alternative to the rigid, traditional school. As recent research has sh…

Freddy Mortier, Willem Colen et al.•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•1994

One of the main objectives of this article is to demonstrate that the onanism discourse is a constitutive part of the history of science. The authors argue that culturalist and externalist explanations of the phenomenon of masturbation are incomplete, and, on the basis of the theory of science of Thomas Nickles, they propose an inner‐scientific explanation. The article thus considers almost 200 years of the history of onanism discourse starting f…

As it was inspired to a large extent by the reform movement (Decroly and others), the 1936 curriculum is generally seen as an important innovation in the history of Belgian primary education. This study shows, however, that educational practice did not change fundamentally in those days. Several factors such as, among other things, personal tensions, rivalries and a lack of continuity in educational policy, inhibited greatly the implementation of…
