  • A Field Study of the Relation between Leaders' Anticipation of Targets' Resistance and Targets' Reports of Influence Tactics Used by Leaders in Dyadic Relations

    Open Access•John E Barbuto, Richard W Scholl et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2001

This research explored the relationship between targets' resistance and leaders' behaviors. Barbuto's concentric zones, Preference, Indifference, Legitimate, Influence, and Noninfluence, were used as the independent variables to predict leaders' use of influence tactics. Results from 83 leader-member dyads imply moderate relationships between perceptions of followers' resistance and influence tactics used by leaders. Directions for research are a…

  • Leaders' Motivation and Perception of Followers' Motivation as Predictors of Influence Tactics Used

    Open Access•John E Barbuto, Richard W Scholl•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1999

This description and test of motivation as a dispositional and situational variable for predicting leaders' influence tactics was based on 83 leader-member dyads sampled from a national restaurant chain. Results support a dispositional perspective, as leaders' sources of motivation best predicted their behaviors. Hypothesized relationships between motivation and leaders' influence tactics were also well supported

  • Information processing style and decision making

    Open Access•Nancy H Leonard, Richard W Scholl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•1999

Information processing style, often termed cognitive style, has gained prominence in the organizational behavior literature as researchers use it as a basis for studying decision making behavior, conflict, strategy development, and group processes. However, the many operational definitions and measures of cognitive style have produced inconsistent and confusing results. This study tested the interrelationship among four measures of this construct…

  • Work Motivation

    Open Access•Nancy H Leonard, Laura L Beauvais et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1999•Cited by: 17•References: 43

This paper proposes a metatheory of work motivation incorporating theories of self-concept that have been proposed in the sociological and psychological literatures. Traditional theories of work motivation are reviewed, and the selfconcept-based sources of motivation are presented. How the self-concept influences behavior in organizations is explained and used to develop a metatheory of motivational sources. Both research and managerial implicati…

  • Motivation Sources Inventory

    Open Access•John E Barbuto, Richard W Scholl•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1998

Scales are developed and tested based on an integrative taxonomy of motivation sources. The sources, as measured on the Motivation Sources Inventory include intrinsic process, instrumental, external self-concept, internal self-concept, and goal internalization. The development procedures produced five subscales with six unique loading items per subscale that seem to capture the domains of interest for each source of motivation. Proposals for rese…

  • Dual Commitment Among Unionized Faculty

    Open Access•Laura L Beauvais, Richard W Scholl et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 24

This study investigated changes in union, organizational, and dual commitment among 267 faculty of a public university in the U.S. over a 6.5-month period (from the beginning of contract negotiations to contract settlement). Specifically, it was hypothesized that labor-management relationship climate, union involvement, perceived pay equity, and the implementation of a multi-tier salary plan would differentially affect faculty members' commitment…

  • An Analysis of Macro Models of Organizations

    Open Access•Richard W Scholl•ARTICLE•Administration & Society•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 36

Macro theories of organizations generally rely on the concept of the goal as the mechanism that gives direction and achieves solidarity of organizational action. In recent years, research and theory building has begun to recognize the importance of such concepts as resource dependence, power, and conflict and to incorporate them into open systems models of organizations. While these open systems models do allow for change in organizational direct…
