Workers' Adaptation Enables Work Functioning 1
In this study, a proposition derived from Functional Job Analysis theory was tested: that workers' adaptive skills are necessary for enabling the operation of functional skills termed Things, Data, and People in the workplace. Restated in broader terms, the veracity of the principle that workers' adaptation enables work functioning was assessed. 29 study participants were assessed on 12 theoretically derived adaptive skills using an in-depth inte…

Developmental Dynamics of Workplace Adaptive Skill
This study examined the dynamic development of workplace adaptive skills using the functional-perspectivist paradigm. Extensions to a model of behavioral functionality are tested whereby workers in four age groups are assessed through an interview-based methodology on the improvement and coalescence of their adaptive skills. Analysis of responses show the dynamic structure of workplace adaptive skills changes over the age groups. Workers in their…
The Impact of Sociotechnical Task Demands on Use of Worker Discretion and Functional Skill
This research applies theoretical propositions from macro-organizational research to the level of task-based work as performed by individual workers. A model, theoretical propositions, and testable hypotheses are developed which relate sociotechnical demand to decisional discretion and worker skill at the task level. Measures of sociotechnical demand are developed for the purpose of this research and the remaining measures of decisional discretio…
A Process investigation of realistic job previews
A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate the role of three possible mediating variables (job attitude, job knowledge, and job acceptance intention) to explain the effects of realistic job previews (RJPs) on entry‐level outcomes. In addition, the effectiveness of an oral realistic job preview presented by an employment interviewer was compared to a written RJP. Sixty undergraduate student volunteers were randomly assigned to one of thr…
A meta‐analytic investigation of the impact of interview format and degree of structure on the validity of the employment interview
A meta‐analysis of the employment interview was carried out to investigate the impact of interview format (individual vs. board interviews) and interview structure (unstructured vs. structured) on the validity of interviews. A thorough review of the unpublished and published literature worldwide yielded 150 usable validity coefficients for the meta‐analysis. Contrary to the predominantly pessimistic views of previous researchers, the interview wa…
Accuracy and reliability of SD y estimates in utility analysis
The accuracy and reliability of SD y estimates (the standard deviation of job performance in Dollars) derived using the method introduced by Schmidt et al . (1979) was investigated using estimates for the position of medical insurance claim approver. As a test of accuracy, the resulting estimates of SD y and Dollar values of performance at the 15th, 50th, and 85th percentiles were compared to more objective values of these parameters based on job…
