  • The institutional dialectic of deforestation and conservation

    E Martín•ARTICLE•The International Forestry Review•2025

This study examines the nuanced relationship between agricultural practices and forest management among the Semende people of South Sumatra. While often stigmatized as "forest destroyers," findings reveal a more complex reality where deforestation for coffee cultivation coexists with robust conservation institutions. Results shows how traditional systems like tunggu tubang (matrilineal inheritance) create both drivers of agricultural expansion an…

  • Effect of school-based interventions on physical activity and fitness in children and adolescents

Susi Kriemler, Ursina Meyer et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sports Medicine•2011

BACKGROUND: School-based interventions are thought to be the most universally applicable and effective way to counteract low physical activity (PA) and fitness although there is controversy about the optimal strategy to intervene. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to summarise recent reviews that aimed to increase PA or fitness in youth and carry out a systematic review of new intervention studies. METHODS: Relevant systematic reviews …

Lesley Burn, Patrick Amanzi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction District and provincial-level public health field workers in Zambia collect, compile, and send data from various sources to national counterparts. Emma Martins, E Martín•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Aesthetics•2011

Much of my work stems from the question how do digital technologies and new media affect our response to images and texts? Specifically, how is the way that we read, the way that we understand and interact with text, and art, changing in a world of screens, of interfaces, of mediating layers of technology? While viewing or interacting with a piece of digital art, does one become frustrated by the inherent intangibility of the medium? Through vide…

  • Factors Affecting Resilience in Children Exposed to Violence

    Open Access•Christopher L Ward, E Martín et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2007•Cited by: 9•References: 38

Exposure to violence puts children at risk for developing a variety of problems, including depression, anxiety, and conduct problems. The extent to which children's individual, family, school, and peer group characteristics influence resilient responses to violence exposure was investigated amongst Grade 6 students living in a high-violence community in Cape Town. The majority (68.44%) reported both witnessing and being a victim of violence. Both…

  • Methods for Testing and Evaluating Survey Questions

Stanley Presser, Presser et al.•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•2004•Cited by: 49•References: 7

An examination of survey pretesting reveals a paradox. On the one hand, pretesting is the only way to evaluate in advance whether a questionnaire causes problems for interviewers or respondents. Consequently, both elementary textbooks and experienced researchers declare pretesting indispensable. On the other hand, most textbooks offer minimal, if any, guidance about pretesting methods, and published survey reports usually provide no information a…

  • Measurement of the validity of a preschool vision screening program

    B Robinson, William R Bobier et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 20

OBJECTIVES: The validity (sensitivity and specificity) of a preschool vision screening program was measured over a 3-year period to determine how well strabismus and significant refractive errors could be detected. METHODS: Public health nurses were trained to administer tests of visual acuity, stereoacuity, and ocular alignment. Failure on any test, visual acuity of 6/9 or less, stereoacuity of less than 100 seconds of arc, or an apparent misali…
