Adaptive kinship
Focusing on two of Jane Rule's novels, The Young in One Another's Arms and Memory Board , this essay treats them as a resource for rethinking the relationship between queerness, kinship, and domesticity. Rather than a fully agential idea of queer kinship-the familiar model of "families we choose"-Rule grounds her model of kinship in shared domestic experience, and in slow and mutual adaptation. Her vision of kinship is profoundly relational, and …

Sonya, Silent No More
In an attempt to address the woman question in his novels, F. M. Dostoevsky explores themes of sexuality2 and chastity in connection with his women characters, e.g., Nastasia Filippovna, Liza Tushina, and Grushenka, who struggle to forgive themselves for having lost their virginity to unworthy male seducers.3 In Sonya Marmeladova, however, Dostoevsky examines the moti vation for voluntary sacrifice of chastity-the compelling need to act in a spir…

A Hermit Goes to War
Just over a century ago Heinrich Hagenmeyer published his definitive book on Peter the Hermit. It has shaped most subsequent discussions of Peter’s career, and it must be said at once that no completely new material has come to light since then. There is, however, a problem of perpetual interest posed by the divergences among twelfth-century accounts of the origins of the First Crusade. Until the advent of modern historiography, it was accepted t…

The Formation of the ‘Crusade Idea’
In order to understand the crusading movement it has always been necessary to define what was understood by the ‘crusade’ as a religious exercise within the Christian tradition. This attempt to identify the ‘crusade idea’ goes back to the earliest commentators on the First Crusade, but has gained increasing vitality during the last thirty years. It is not a matter of weighing the relative importance of, on the one hand, the religious and, on the …
