  • What type of computer-assisted exercise supports young less skilled spellers in resolving problems in open and closed syllable words

Open Access•Maartje Hilte, Pieter Reitsma et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Dyslexia•2008

  • Computer-Based Exercises for Learning to Read and Spell by Deaf Children

    P H Reitsma, P Reitsma•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2008

There is a surprising lack of systematic research evaluating the effects of reading exercises for young deaf children. Therefore, for this article, two computer-based exercises were developed and learning effects were determined by posttests. One (spelling oriented) exercise was to select the correct word among three orthographically similar alternatives that corresponds to a drawing or a sign (digital video). The other (meaning oriented) exercis…

  • Spelling pronunciation and visual preview both facilitate learning to spell irregular words

Open Access•Maartje Hilte, Pieter Reitsma et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Dyslexia•2006

  • Effects of spelling pronunciations during spelling practice in Dutch

Maartje Hilte, Mieke Bos et al.•ARTICLE•Written Language & Literacy•2005

Because it is often assumed that difficulties in spelling are of phonological origin, the aim of this study was to examine whether emphasis on the pronunciation of individual graphemes is beneficial for learning to spell words in poor spellers. In the first experiment Dutch children with a spelling deficit had to practice words in two types of exercises: (1) full production after memorizing the orthographic pattern, and (2) a special pronunciatio…

  • Experienced teachers’ expectations about the potential effectiveness of spelling exercises

Open Access•Mieke Bos, Pieter Reitsma et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Dyslexia•2003

  • Investigating the Dimensions of Spelling Ability

Open Access•Annelise Notenboom, Pieter Reitsma et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2003

In this study, the latent structure of a spelling achievement test for elementary school grades was investigated. Factor analyses revealed that for Grades 2 to 6, the test was unidimensional, whereas for Grade 1, two factors were found: a phonological factor and an orthographic factor. Because of the anchor-test design, vertical equatingwas required to fit a two-parameter, unidimensional item response theory model. Concurrent calibration of the p…

  • Preschool phonological representations and development of reading skills

Open Access•Ralph Wesseling, Pieter Reitsma et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Dyslexia•2001

  • Analyzing the development of individual differences in terms of Matthew effects in reading

Janwillem Bast, Pieter Reitsma et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1998•Cited by: 24•References: 2

The Matthew effect hypothesis provides a theoretical framework to describe the development of individual differences in reading ability. The model predicts an increase of individual differences in reading.Reciprocal relationships between reading and other factors seem to cause these increasing differences. This longitudinal study of 3 years was concerned with uncovering the existence and causes of increasing individual differences in reading in the…

  • Mathew Effects in Reading

Janwillem Bast, Pieter Reitsma et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1997

The Matthew effect hypothesis in reading predicts that the gap between good and poor readers increases with time. Although, intuitively appealing, the Matthew effect has hardly been empirically studied in longitudinal studies of reading. Two competing longitudinal models were used to represent the Matthew effect hypothesis: the Latent Growth Curve model and the Simplex model with structured means. It is argued that on the basis of theoretical and…
