  • How many L2 word meanings can learners recall? A latent trait approach to vocabulary size estimation

Open Access•Akira Hamada, Yuko Hoshino et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•2024

This study investigated the size of meaning-recall vocabulary knowledge and its variations across word-frequency and second language (L2) proficiency levels. Despite the extensive research history in determining lexical coverage and thresholds for effective L2 use, much of the evidence is based on measures of meaning-recognition vocabulary knowledge. Using a latent-trait approach, we calculated the probability that learners could recall the meani…

  • Robust evidence for the simple view of second language reading

Open Access•Akira Hamada, Haruka Shimizu et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Second Language…•2024

This paper reports a complete secondary analysis of Jeon and Yamashita’s (2022) systematic review to build the second language (L2) model of the simple view of reading (SVR). The same meta-analytic methodologies were maintained, with the exception of applying meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM). This study successfully replicated some of the aggregated correlations but not others, owing to (a) the recoding of the original raw data …

  • Effects of multidimensional foreign language reading anxiety on achievement in Japanese EFL classrooms

    Open Access•Akira Hamada, Shuichi Takaki•ARTICLE•System•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 3

  • Approximate replication of Matsuda and Gobel (2004) for psychometric validation of the Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale

    Open Access•Akira Hamada, Shuichi Takaki•ARTICLE•Language Teaching•2021•References: 27

This paper reports an approximate replication of Matsuda and Gobel (2004) for the psychometric validation of the Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scale (FLRAS). Their study examined the structural aspects of the FLRAS developed by Saito, Horwitz, and Garza (1999). The results showed that the FLRAS measured three different subcomponents of foreign language reading anxiety; none of the factors predicted foreign language performance in content-based…
