Who and what counts? Understanding work and workers that matter dialogically
In their essay ‘Indefinite Detention’, Judith Butler (p. 100) made the point that ‘the question of who will be treated humanely presupposes that we have first settled the question of who does and does not count ’ (Butler: 91, emphasis added ). This paper considers this vital issue in the format of a discussion between us as co-authors whose work speaks to the concerns of this special issue – precarity, mattering and marginalization. The paper for…
Minding the gap
Working through (mis)recognition
Most workers around the world are part of the precariat, characterized by non-permanent, informal, short-term, low-pay, low-skill, and insecure jobs. While there have been many socio-economic critiques of the negative impacts of precarity on workers, the literature has increasingly asked how precarious workers actually live their lives and how their subjectivities are produced on a daily basis. We contribute to this literature by providing a psyc…
Rescuing gender
In this paper, we explore the theoretical and empirical links between gender and resilience within the context of crisis management by developing a theoretically oriented analysis of the iconic case of the 33 Chilean miners rescue. Analytic focus is placed on the capacity of resilience‐promoting actors to embody and transform the discursive and practical dimensions of gendered regimes that predominate at an organizational level. As a result, we c…
What lies beneath resilience
This article addresses how shared forms of leadership can activate resilient organizing to cope with catastrophic events by examining the case of the 33 Chilean miners’ rescue who survived confinement at 600 m below ground for 69 days. Qualitative analysis of interview and document data reveals how the miners as a group engaged in the sharing of agency vis-a-vis the task of absorbing strain and anxiety, thus enabling a sophisticated work capacity…
Introduction to the special issue on the contested realities of the circular economy
In the past decade the 'circular economy' (CE) has established itself as an influential model for economic development, with the Chinese central and regional governments The ambition of the model is to create 'circular' material flows that break with the current 'linear' economic rationale of take, make and dispose, creating business value for its participants Inspired, among other influences, by the cradle-to-cradle design methodology This ambit…
Circadian cortisol secretion and circadian adrenal responses to ACTH are maintained in dexamethasone suppressed capuchin monkeys ( Cebus apella )
We tested the hypothesis that the capuchin monkey adrenal ( Cebus apella ) gland has oscillatory properties that are independent of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) by exploring under ACTH suppression by dexamethasone: (i) maintenance of a circadian rhythm of plasma cortisol and (ii) clock time dependency of plasma cortisol response to exogenous ACTH. The capuchin monkey had a clear ACTH and plasma cortisol rhythm. Dexamethasone treatment resul…
