  • Mapping associations of polygenic scores with autistic and ADHD traits in a single city region

Open Access•Zoe E Reed, Richard Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2025

BACKGROUND: The genetic and environmental aetiology of autistic and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) traits is known to vary spatially, but does this translate into variation in the association of specific common genetic variants? METHODS: We mapped associations between polygenic scores for autism and ADHD and their respective traits in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (N = 4,255-6,165) across the area surroundin…

  • Maternal smoking during pregnancy and offspring risk of intellectual disability

    Open Access•Paul Madley‐Dowd, Paul Madley-Dowd et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

The results are not consistent with a causal effect of maternal smoking during pregnancy on offspring ID

  • Social work contact in a UK cohort study

Open Access•Meng Le Zhang, Andrew Boyd et al.•ARTICLE•Children and Youth Services Review•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 29

There is potentially a high degree of underreporting of social work contact in social surveys and cohort studies. Researchers should adopt methods to account for this issue in the future. The risk of emotional and behavioural problems is greater among children whose mothers have had contact with social workers compared to other children with seemingly similar adversities

  • The Improving Global Health fellowship

Open Access•Alexandra Monkhouse, Leanne Sadler et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2018

BACKGROUND: The importance of leadership development in the early stages of careers in the NHS has been highlighted in recent years and many programmes have been implemented which seek to develop leadership skills in healthcare professionals. The Improving Global Health (IGH) Fellowship scheme is one such programme, it provides a unique leadership development opportunity through an overseas placement with a focus on quality improvement work. This…

  • The impact of cycle proficiency training on cycle-related behaviours and accidents in adolescence

Open Access•Alison Teyhan, Rosie Cornish et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

Our results suggest cycle training courses for children can have benefits that persist into adolescence. However, the low use of cycle helmets, very low use of high-visibility clothing, and low levels of cycling to school for girls, indicate the further potential for interventions to encourage cycling, and safe cycling behaviours, in young people

  • Cohort Profile

    Open Access•Andy Boyd, J Golding et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) is a transgenerational prospective observational study investigating influences on health and development across the life course. It considers multiple genetic, epigenetic, biological, psychological, social and other environmental exposures in relation to a similarly diverse range of health, social and developmental outcomes. Recruitment sought to enroll pregnant women in the Bristol ar…

  • Cohort Profile

    Open Access•Abigail Fraser, C Macdonald-Wallis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

The Avon Longitudinal Study of Children and Parents (ALSPAC) was established to understand how genetic and environmental characteristics influence health and development in parents and children. All pregnant women resident in a defined area in the South West of England, with an expected date of delivery between 1st April 1991 and 31st December 1992, were eligible and 13761 women (contributing 13867 pregnancies) were recruited. These women have be…

  • Socio-economic position and childhood multimorbidity

Open Access•Rosie Cornish, Rosie P Cornish et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2013

We have found some evidence that, in younger children, multimorbidity may be higher amongst children whose parents are less well educated. In older children and adolescents this association is less clear. We have also demonstrated that linkage between prospective observational studies and electronic patient records can provide an effective way of obtaining objectively measured outcome variables

  • Council tax valuation band predicts breast feeding and socio-economic status in the ALSPAC study population

Open Access•Norman Beale, Gill Kane et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

CTVB predicts breast-feeding rates and links them with social circumstances. CTVB could be used as the basis for accurate resource allocation for community paediatric services: UK breast-feeding rates are low and merit targeted promotion

  • The Role of the Great Powers in the United Nations System

Open Access•Andrew Boyd, Andy Boyd•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•1970

The world into which the United Nations was born twenty-five years ago was a world divided, almost as summarily as Caesar's Gaul, into three parts. Never had there been seen such a picture of the domination of virtually the whole globe by a few great powers. To mark the distribution of real power at the end of World War n, you needed only three flags. If you then travelled round the northern part of the globe, from the central European dividing l…

  • Chinese Architecture and Town Planning

Nelson I Wu, Andrew Boyd et al.•ARTICLE•Artibus Asiae•1966

  • Nationalism and Labor in Ireland, Part II

    Andrew Boyd, Andy Boyd•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1953

When James Connolly was executed by a British firing squad after the 1916 Rebellion, the Irish working class lost its most competent and courageous leader. No one of equal stature has yet arisen in the Irish labor movement to take his place as leader and theorist. Connolly was forty-six when he died, but for most of his adult life he had labored in the building of an Irish socialist and trade-union movement which he hoped would be guided by the t…
