  • Trade Sophistication and Economic Development Stages in the Context of Global Digitalization

Open Access•Kim Hanh Nguyen, Anna Strutt et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2026

This study aims to explore the relationship between trade sophistication and economic development stages, including in the context of digitalization. We employ nonparametric, semiparametric, and parametric methods, covering the period from 2003 to 2024 across 119 countries, categorized into three income groups. Our findings show that GDP per capita has a positive but diminishing relationship with export and import sophistication, suggesting that …

  • Does foreign investment improve domestic firm productivity? Evidence from a developing country

Van Ha, Mark J Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy•2021•References: 7

This study examines the linkages between foreign investment and the total factor productivity of local enterprises within manufacturing industry in Vietnam. The Wooldridge GMM estimation approach is applied to panel data to estimate production function, which allows us to obtain total factor productivity of local firms. We then investigate how foreign investment influences local enterprise productivity through different spillover channels using t…

  • Does foreign investment benefit the exporting activities of Vietnamese firms

    Open Access•Van Ha, Mark J Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2020

Using firm‐level data, this paper examines the effects of foreign investment on the exporting behaviour of domestic firms in the Vietnamese manufacturing and service sectors. Applying the Heckman selection model on panel data and following the Wooldridge approach, we find that investment by foreign firms has a significant positive effect on the decision of domestic firms in the same and upstream sectors to export. The proportion of exports of dom…

  • The impact of free trade agreements on FDI inflows: The case of Vietnam

My Duong, Mark J Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 7

We examine the relationship between FTAs and inward FDI in Vietnam using panel data for Vietnam’s 17 main foreign investors over the period 1997–2016, and 23 partners for the sub-period 2005–2016. In contrast to past studies that focus on either multiple FTAs for a group of countries or case studies for a well-known FTA, we evaluate whether the overall involvement in FTAs of a developing country such as Vietnam increases FDI inflows. Results from…

  • Climbing the property ladder: An analysis of market integration in London property prices

    Open Access•Mark J Holmes, Jesús Otero et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 28

We investigate the long-run convergence of house prices across the London boroughs based on a pairwise unit root probabilistic testing procedure. In sharp contrast to the earlier literature, we employ a dataset that distinguishes between four different types of property in each borough. Using a quarterly dataset that spans from 1995 to 2014, we find evidence in favour of long-run convergence thereby suggesting that the great majority of London bo…

  • How Do Workers’ Remittances Respond to Lending Rates

    Open Access•Gazi Hassan, Gazi M Hassan et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration•2018•References: 5

The literature on migrants’ motivation to remit ranges from self‐interest to altruism where studies analyse the impact from home country interest rates or interest differentials between home and host countries. We reinterpret the interest rate elasticity of remittances as a form of debt‐repayment responsiveness rather than based on opportunistic motivation. Modelling altruistic transfer and debt‐repayment, we find that, for a panel of countries, …

  • Household credit for the poor and child schooling in peri-urban Vietnam

Tinh Doan, John Gibson et al.•ARTICLE•International Development…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 8

This paper uses a novel dataset of poor households in peri-urban areas in Vietnam to estimate impacts of small loans on child schooling. The Probit and Negative Binomial model estimates roughly indicate no strong evidence of the effect. However, breaking down credit into formal and informal credit and credit for boy and girl schooling provides better insights. The paper suggests that to obtain the target of sustainable poverty reduction, easing a…

  • Is There Long-run Convergence among Regional House Prices in the UK

    Open Access•Mark J Holmes, Anthony Grimes et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2008•Cited by: 31•References: 23

This paper investigates the long-run convergence of regional house prices in the UK. Existing studies have failed to reach a consensus on whether or not regional house prices exhibit long-run convergence with each other. The application is proposed of a new test involving unit root testing of the first principal component based on regional—national house price differentials. Using mix-adjusted quarterly data for 1973—2006, it is found that the fi…

  • Productivity growth of East Asia economies' manufacturing: A decomposition analysis

Hailin Liao, Mark Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2007

Applying a stochastic production frontier to sector-level data within manufacturing, this paper examines total factor productivity (TFP) growth for seven East Asian economies during 1963–98, using both single country and cross-country regressions. The analysis focuses on the trend in technological progress (TP) and technical efficiency change (TEC), and the role of productivity change in economic growth. The empirical results reveal that although…

HOLMES M. J. (1993) The demand for building society mortgage finance in Northern Ireland and Scotland, Reg. Studies 27, 103–108. Utilizing a limited sample size of annual observations, this study explains the demand for building society advances for house purchase in Northern Ireland and Scotland for the period 1970–89. The study assesses the nature of mortgage rationing present in the 1970s and early 1980s and concludes that equilibrium rationin…
