Open Access•Geoff Harkne, Geoff Harkness•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2021

Hip‐hop denotes a mainstream subculture comprised of rap music (whose lyrics are performed by rappers or MCs), breakdancing, DJing, and graffiti art. Hip‐hop fashion and vernacular are embedded within these four elements to varying degrees. Emerging from New York City in the 1970s, hip‐hop has diffused around the world and been reconfigured to suit various contexts. Hip‐hop is among the most significant forms of popular culture of the late twenti…

  • Changing Qatar

    Geoff Harkne, Geoff Harkness•BOOK•Changing Qatar•2020

Qatar is the wealthiest country in the world—and one of the fastest growing. Its current population is five times larger than it was in 2000. Photos of the Arabian Gulf micronation from the 1980s show a few modest one-story buildings. Today, Qatar’s capital, Doha, is a modern petro-boomtown whose futuristic skyline features a phalanx of space-age skyscrapers. In 2022, Qatar will be the first Arab nation to host the FIFA World Cup. To prepare, Qat…

  • Hijab Micropractices

    Open Access•Geoff Harkne, Geoff Harkness•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 14

The hijab, the headscarf and cloak worn by some Muslim women, is often viewed through a lens of constraint, but in this article I emphasize its flexible use by women in Qatar, a wealthy, conservative Arabian Gulf nation. As part of a neoliberal agenda, the Qatari government frequently depicts female citizens using an “empowered woman” narrative that touts increased college enrollment, workforce participation, and sports involvement as evidence of…

  • Professional Dissonance

Geoff Harkne, Geoff Harkness et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Development•2017

This article examines the working lives of creative-class professionals in the Global South using two case studies: university educators and museum professionals employed in Qatar. A small country on the Arabian Peninsula, Qatar is an ideal site for the study of professionals in a developing yet authoritarian nation. We argue that the cultural attributes of the professorial and curatorial communities, including creativity, autonomy, and intellect…

  • Modern Traditionalism

Open Access•Geoff Harkne, Geoff Harkness et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2014•Cited by: 10•References: 53

Consanguineous marriage, or matrimony between biological relatives, is commonplace and on the rise in Qatar, an ethnically heterogeneous Middle Eastern country. Previous studies have demonstrated that modernization often reduces traditional forms of marriage, such as arranged and consanguineous matrimony. Qatar's rapid modernization, however, has coincided with increased rates of endogamy. In this article, the authors examine the social processes…

  • Spring forward

    Geoff Harkne, Geoff Harkness•ARTICLE•Soccer and Society•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 10

In the wake of the Arab Spring, there has been increased interest in female athleticism in the Middle East. In part, this stems from the fact that women have participated in the uprisings in unprecedented numbers. It is also tied to larger socio-economic changes that have occurred in the Middle East, both before and after the rebellions. Based on fieldwork and in-depth interviews, the present study offers an ethnographic account of an all-female …

  • Out of Bounds

Geoff Harkne, Geoff Harkness•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 7

For the past 20 years, female athletic participation in the Middle East has been increasing. In the conservative Gulf region, female athleticism has been met with a degree of ambivalence, as questions arise over the appropriate role for women in society. While female sports have been studied in Gulf countries such as Kuwait and Bahrain, the region's burgeoning superpower, Qatar, remains underexamined. The present research fills this gap by explor…

  • Backpackers and Gangstas

    Open Access•Geoff Harkne, Geoff Harkness•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 7

This project contains an ethnographic and interview-based study of White rappers in Chicago. The research was fueled by a single question: How do White rappers create and maintain authenticity when they are clearly inauthentic by the standards of hip-hop? Though the term authenticity is used often in sociology and other literatures, the author seeks to unpack this mechanism in search of the specific social processes at work. The author begins wit…
