Christian clergy, along with missionaries from Austria, England, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Italy, and the Vatican resided in the Ottoman Empire from its beginning. As representatives of their respective churches, they served the spiritual needs of their coreligionists, ran schools and hospitals, and—in the case of European clergy—sometimes acted as unofficial diplomats. Autocephalous Eastern Orthodox churches such as the patriarchates of C…

This study compares the cold war period and contemporary issues which involve the triangle with a focus on Iraq, Syria and Egypt. It traces turning points in the 20th century, present dilemmas and conclusions in a state of flux. Major conclusions are: that a cold war is re-emerging because of Russia's assertion of its world power status and Washington's claims to world leadership. The other is the conspicuous similarity in Turkey between the Demo…

The Islamization of Turkey has been an ongoing process since the 1970s and was exacerbated by the 1980 military coup. The Turkish-Islamic synthesis had been conceived as an antidote against communism and became a salient policy. The atmosphere became increasingly convenient for Islamists to participate in politics as well as in socioeconomic forums. The ruling AKP defines itself as conservative democratic. Nur Bilge Criss•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2007

In 1918, the Iranian parliament offered an oil concession to the American Standard Oil Company in northern Iran. One motivation was to distance Russia, which had been occupying that area during World War I, but was in revolutionary turmoil in 1918. An American presence might also become a counterbalance to the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (apoc), which monopolized Iran's oil industry. Britain also had militarily occupied southern Iran during the war…

  • A Short History of Anti-Americanism and Terrorism

Nur Bilge Criss•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2002•Cited by: 2

Throughout the past century, anti-Americanism crescendoed and then subsided in rough proportion to the global power projected by the United States. In Turkey, anti-American protests reached a new level of intensity in the late 1960s when U.S. actions challenged Turkey's sovereignty. While subtle acts of resistance came from the military and other government officials, most protests came from ideologically motivated leftists who clashed with equal…

  • Survival of Rationalism between Hostility and Economic Growth

Open Access•Süheyla Özyıldırım, Süheyla Özyildirim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•2001•References: 10

This article examines the interaction of country pairs who have historically been and are potentially hostile. Hostility is described as a function of arms stocks versus bilateral trade. Armament intensifies the current level of hostility whereas trade reduces the possibility of militarized disputes. We argue that welfare-maximizing decisionmakers have to seek methods other than accumulation of arms to increase the security of their nations, and …

This study is undertaken to evaluate the profile of the PKK (Kurdish Workers Party) and Kurdish political behavior separately in an attempt to distinguish the Kurdish issue from terrorism. PKK's profile has changed between 1978, when it was founded and now, depending on Turkey's internal politics as well as the changing international environment. Basically, it started out as a Marxist‐Leninist separatist organization, but by 1990 switched to dema…
