Functional holism of systems
This research note presents an approach to assure that a system meets the basic property of holism. Holism is the principle that the whole is different from, and may be greater than, the sum of its rationally separable parts. This approach suggested in this research note focuses on the functions of the system and on the parts of the system. The approach incorporates the basic property of a system, namely, its hierarchy, and the functions, require…
Student engagement with evidence-based supports for literacy on a digital platform
There is a persistent gap between education research and practice, including in the design of educational technology. This study bridges this gap and examines our partnership with a literacy platform to implement evidence-based digital features that support different learner needs. We examined students’ (N = 1857; Grades 1-6) use of these new optional features (e.g., audio supports, text magnification, annotation) when completing assignments onli…
Behavioral and Neural Responses to Tone Errors in Foreign‐Accented Mandarin
Previous event‐related potentials (ERP) research has investigated how foreign accent modulates listeners’ neural responses to lexical‐semantic and morphosyntactic errors. We extended this line of research to consider whether pronunciation errors in Mandarin Chinese are processed differently when a foreign‐accented speaker makes them relative to when a native‐accented speaker makes them (a conceptual replication using the materials from Pelzl et a…
Non-native phonemic discrimination, phonological short term memory, and word learning
High functional load inhibits phonological contrast loss
Functional Load and the Lexicon
All languages use individually meaningless, contrastive categories in combination to create distinct words. Despite their central role in communication, these “phoneme” contrasts can be lost over the course of language change. The century-old functional load hypothesis proposes that loss of a phoneme contrast will be inhibited in relation to the work that it does in distinguishing words. In a previous work we showed for the first time that a simp…
Hi-Lab
Few adult second language (L2) learners successfully attain high-level proficiency. Although decades of research on beginning to intermediate stages of L2 learning have identified a number of predictors of the rate of acquisition, little research has examined factors relevant to predicting very high levels of L2 proficiency. The current study, conducted in the United States, was designed to examine potential cognitive predictors of successful lea…
Provision of fluoride varnish treatment by medical and dental care providers
Overall access and utilization of FVT increased, but substantial racial/ ethnic and geographic variation in the provision of FVT for children enrolled in Wisconsin Medicaid was observed. Future policies should incorporate measures that will specifically address the racial and geographic variations identified in this study
Primary Language Spoken at Home and Children's Dental Service Utilization in the United States
Children that did not speak English at home were less likely to receive preventive or routine dental care. However, after adjusting for other socio-economic factors, our study suggests that language barriers may not play as pronounced a role in the receipt of dental care as that documented for medical services
Sonic City
Our research tracks the location of musicians and music establishments in U.S. regions from 1970 to 2004. We find that the music industry has become significantly more concentrated over time. New York and Los Angeles remain dominant locations, with Nashville emerging as a third major center. This reflects the economic and artistic advantages of large markets. We also find evidence of the persistence of musicians and music scenes in some smaller l…
