A census of African American cross-cultural overseas missionaries was completed between 2020 and mid-2021, encompassing data gathered since 1998. Over 600 mission agencies listed in the North American Mission Handbook were canvassed for US-born Black missionaries, and comparisons made between data from the 21st and 22nd editions. • The sport participation legacy of major events in the UK

Open Access•Girish Ramchandani, Richard Coleman et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2019

This paper examines the extent to which attending major sporting events leads to subsequent changes in the sport participation behaviour of spectators. The research covered seven single-sport events of World or European level held in the UK in 2014 and was concerned with spectators (aged 16 and over) who attended one of these events. Baseline data was gathered from a sample of spectators at each event using a face-to-face survey. Follow-up data w…

The investigation is informed by walk-history data relating to more than 79,000 participants over a two-year period. Methods used include meas…

  • Factors influencing the inspirational effect of major sports events on audience sport participation behaviour

    Girish Ramchandani, Themis Kokolakakis et al.•ARTICLE•World Leisure & Recreation•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the factors that determine the extent to which spectators attending one-off sports events feel inspired to increase their own participation in sport. The research considers both the socio-demographic and sport participation profile of the audience as well as the characteristics of an event as predictors of inspiration. The methodological approach involved secondary analysis of data collected from audience…

  • Saving Original Sin from the Secularists

    Open Access•Richard Coleman, Richard J Coleman•ARTICLE•Theology Today•2014

Nearly five hundred years ago Martin Luther countered Erasmus’ rather optimistic understanding of human nature with his strong language of “bondage of the will.” The landscape, though, has been radically changed by a new science of human nature. Building on a decade or more of basic research, four heavyweights in the secular world, Peter Singer, Steven Pinker, Jeremy Rifkin, and Matt Ridley, have explanations for why we are becoming less violent …

  • The Economic Impact of Major Sports Events

Open Access•Chris Gratton, Simon Shibli et al.•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2006

Over recent years there has been a marked contrast between the discussions around the economic impact of major sports events in North America on the one hand and most of the rest of the world on the other. In the USA the sports \nstrategies of cities in the USA have largely been based on infrastructure (stadium) investment for professional team sports, in particular, American football, baseball, basketball, and ice hockey. Over the last decade ci…

  • Sport and Economic Regeneration in Cities

    Open Access•Chris Gratton, Simon Shibli et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2005•Cited by: 14•References: 15

Investment in sporting infrastructure in cities over the past 20 years was not primarily aimed at getting the local community involved in sport, but was instead aimed at attracting tourists, encouraging inward investment and changing the image of the city. The first example of this new strategy was seen in Sheffield with the investment of £147 million in sporting facilities to host the World Student Games of 1991. More recently, Manchester spent …

  • Biblical Inerrancy

    Open Access•Richard Coleman, Richard J Coleman•ARTICLE•Theology Today•1975

“The question of biblical inerrancy is remarkably the same now as it was nearly a century ago.... If history is to be our teacher, and biblical inerrancy our illustration, we have somehow not learned from the past.”

  • Response Generalization in Two Categories of Classroom Behavior

    Open Access•Richard Coleman•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1974

Research has demonstrated that working behaviors and academic performance can be manipulated in classroom settings. However, generalization to one group of behavior when the other group is being manipulated has not been sufficiently explored. 19 male adolescent institutionalized delinquents were randomly assigned to 2 groups. Programmed instruction, and a script economy were the treatment conditions. Group 1 was reinforced for working behavior wh…

  • An Economical Model of the Engineered Classroom

    Open Access•Richard Coleman•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1971

A behavior modification model was developed for a special class of 5 ‘disturbed’ children following the collapse of a “green thumb” program. Specific appropriate classroom behaviors were identified for each child. The goal of the program was to increase the frequency of these appropriate behaviors to the extent that the child could function full-time in a regular class. The organization of the class as well as the behavior modification procedures…

  • Can Creativity Be Predicted

    Open Access•Richard Coleman•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

Prediction of creativity has been singularly unsuccessful despite a wide variety of approaches. One of the reasons for this lack of success is that vested interests in education and psychology appear to prefer to focus on the narrow range of achievement behavior which has been erroneously labelled intelligence. This mislabelling has precluded exploration into the remaining spectrum of intellectual process, i.e., intelligent and creative behavior
