  • How marketizing and technologizing education undermines spirituality

    Open Access•Damian Ruth•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of…•2023

This paper takes education to be concerned with human flourishing, and education that is distinct from instrumental training and which attends to the spirit of students. Such education is holistic and integral and develops the capacity for sustained attention and concentration. Marketization does not, and its impact on education has been long decried. The use of technology in education has always been met with ambivalence. What comprises technolo…

  • Organización, Identidad, Lugar

    Open Access•Damian Ruth•ARTICLE•Scripta Nova Revista Electrónica…•2019

  • Anxious academics

Damian Ruth, Suze Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2017•Cited by: 8

Our New Zealand university recently required us to produce portfolios for a research evaluation process. At a presentation promoting and explaining the process, we raised questions and objections. Pointlessly, it seemed. But we continued to rail and rant about it. One of us set in motion the following discussion, presented here as a series of critical and creative autoethnographic responses. We have resisted, with some anxiety, the urge and the e…

  • With the eyes of others

    Damian Ruth•ARTICLE•Ethnography & Education•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 15

The author raises questions about ethnographic methodology through exploring the implications of using observations produced by his colleagues about his office as data for his research. This process blurred the boundaries between researcher, method and the object and subject of research. It meets some criteria for ethnography and not others, and does not evidence clear definitional boundaries for any sub-genre such as autoethnography or collabora…

  • Leader as priest

    Open Access•Damian Ruth•ARTICLE•Leadership•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 14

This paper takes its cue from Hatch et al. and their metaphor of leader as priest. This metaphor is extended in order to critically assess the importation of the discourse of spirituality into the arena of corporate leadership. In exploring this extended metaphor it becomes apparent that the concept of a spiritually informed corporate leadership is flawed. We may expect individuals to behave ethically and morally, but we should not confuse this w…

  • The role of age and experiential factors in the perception of academic work in South Africa

    Damian Ruth•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational…•2004

  • Footnotes in the corridors of power

    Damian Ruth•ARTICLE•Scrutiny2•1998

I live, diggling the ground out from under my feet. I am not who I was three years ago – is what I knew then valid now? I knew about students then, and know about them now. Who is knowing what about whom
