  • Self-Rated Autistic-Like Traits and Capacity of Visual Working Memory

    Open Access•Junichi Takahashi, Jiro Gyoba•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2012

The effect on the capacity of visual working memory of spatial complexity (as defined by Garner's principle) in rotation and reflection transformation was examined in persons differing along the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), using a change-detection task. On each trial, nine line segments were arrayed in simple, medium, and complex configurations, which were presented in memory and test displays. 27 participants (8 men, 19 women; M age = 22.3 yr…

  • Topographic distribution of brain activities corresponding to psychological structures underlying affective meanings

Open Access•Yousuke Kawachi, Hideaki Kawabata et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2011

Affective meanings aroused by various objects, such as paintings, melodies, or words, can be quantified by the semantic differential (SD) technique (Osgood, Suci, & Tannenbaum, 1957). In this technique, three main factors (“Evaluation,”“Activity,” and “Potency”) have been consistently extracted from factor analyses of participants' subjective ratings of various objects using bipolar scales of adjective pairs. In the present study, we investigated…

  • Infants' perception of concavity and convexity of shaded objects

    Open Access•Hideaki Kawabata, Jiro Gyoba•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2011

The discriminative sensitivities of 30 4‐month‐old and 30 8‐month‐old infants for concave and convex objects were measured using the preferential‐looking method. Five cylinder‐like objects with different magnitudes of concave or convex shaded surfaces and outline contours were presented to the infants in pairs. The results indicated that the 4‐month‐old infants could discriminate better between object convexities than between object concavities. …

  • Evidence and a computational explanation of cultural differences in facial expression recognition

Matthew N Dailey, Carrie A Joyce et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2010

Facial expressions are crucial to human social communication, but the extent to which they are innate and universal versus learned and culture dependent is a subject of debate. Two studies explored the effect of culture and learning on facial expression understanding. In Experiment 1, Japanese and U.S. participants interpreted facial expressions of emotion. Each group was better than the other at classifying facial expressions posed by members of…

  • Affective Impressions and Memorability of Color-Form Combinations

Yuiko Sakuta, Jiro Gyoba•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•2006•References: 3

In this study the authors investigate how various impressions affect the recognition of color-form pairs. They performed a preliminary study, a main study of impression rating using the semantic differential method, and a recognition experiment. On the basis of the preliminary study, the authors chose 14 appropriate pairs of adjectives and 48 color and form stimuli and used them for the main study. Factor analysis of the main study extracted thre…

  • Analyzing the Aesthetic Impressions of Alexithymic Japanese Students

Open Access•Miho Suzuki, Jiro Gyoba et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2004

We investigated the association between alexithymic tendencies as measured by the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale and the characteristics of aesthetic impressions for words and drawings. Impressions were measured using the semantic differential technique in three groups of Japanese students (High scores n = 31, Moderate scores n = 40, and a Control group n = 182) who were presented only words (Word condition), only drawings (Drawing condition),…

  • Priming effects on musical chord identification

    Open Access•Hiroshi Arao, Jiro Gyoba•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2001

The present study examined whether priming effects on chord identification are facilitative or disruptive, by employing a control (no‐prime) condition in addition to a related‐prime condition and an unrelated‐prime condition. According to the activation hypothesis, which predicts a facilitative effect of musically related chords, responses are expected to be faster in the related‐prime condition than in the control condition. In contrast, accordi…

  • The visual phantom illusion under oblique inducing gratings

    Jiro Gyoba•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1994

When the orientation of the inducing grating is set oblique to the horizontal occluder, the appearance of visual phantoms splits into two types. One is “aligned phantoms”, where oblique phantom bars emerge along the orientation of the inducing grating. The other is “misaligned phantoms”, which are produced by connecting the nearest bars between the top and bottom sections of the inducing grating, rather than along the orientation of the inducing …
