Eating Motivations and Bulimic Behavior among College Women
Given observed correlations between certain types of motivations for alcohol use and problem-drinking outcomes, it was hypothesized that a similar pattern of eating motivations might predict bulimic eating behavior. For a sample of 161 college women, eating motivations which imply stress reduction or mood alteration correlated positively with bulimia as measured by the Bulimia Test
Drinking Rates among College Students
Recently presented data seemed to suggest that rates of alcohol consumption among college students in the Rocky Mountain region have been relatively stable over the past 16 yr. (Condon & Carman, 1986). Over-all consumption among these students appears to have averaged about one mixed drink (can of beer, glass of wine) per day both in 1965 and 1981 when the data were collected. Additional data were recently gathered at the University of Wyoming (P…
Drinking among College Students
Alcohol consumption rates of college students in 1981 are compared with a similar sample taken in 1965 using the same measures. No evidence is found for a change in consumption rates among college students during this time interval
Population Change and Public Drinking in Three Rural Communities
Three rural communities are compared in terms of barroom occupancy rates and observed alcohol consumption in that setting. It is hypothesized that rapid population increase will be associated with higher barroom occupancy rates and heavier consumption rates. This hypothesis is not supported. Instead it is found that higher levels of public drinking are found in association with population loss. It is concluded that generalizations concerning the …
Alienation and drinking motivations among adolescent females
The present study examined a hypothesized relation between alienation and stated motivations for alcohol use. It was predicted that such a relation would emerge more clearly among adolescent females than among adolescent males, and this prediction was confirmed. Among females, problem-related drinking motivations correlated positively with alienation, whereas social-convivial motivations correlated negatively with this attribute. No comparable co…
Family Disorganization and Problem Drinking in a Rural Population
A number of authors have addressed themselves to the issue of deviance as a socially induced phenomenon 10,4,5,9,7. To varying degrees all of these theorists have emphasized the importance of socio-cultural disintegration in the etiology of deviant behaviour, including psychiatric disorder. Basic to this theoretical position is the notion that social disintegration fosters psychiatric disorder through interfering with the achievement of socially …
Marijuana Use and Personal Values of College Students
For 103 college students, personal values for peer affection and independence were examined in relation to marijuana use. It was hypothesized that amount of marijuana use would correlate positively with values for independence and negatively with values for peer affection, and such correlations were found among users, reaching statistical significance in the case of values for independence. No difference was found between users and non-users. The…
Internal-External Control and Motivations for Alcohol Use among High School Students
Internal-External locus of control and alcohol use were investigated among high school students, and it was found that external control was positively related to problem-oriented motivations and social complications. A developmental model for the relationship between I-E control and drinking is proposed
Validation of a Measure of Motivations for Alcohol Use
A group of 51 alcoholics was compared with and found to differ from three other groups (188 enlisted Army personnel, 88 college students, and 199 high school students) on a measure of motivations for drinking. The magnitude and direction of the differences found tend to provide support for the validity of the motivations measure
Training Community Consultants for System Change
Internal-external locus of control, alcohol use and adjustment among high school students in rural communities
Expectations and Socialization Experiences Related to Drinking among U.S. Servicemen
In young Army servicemen, low expectations of achievement were significantly related to problem drinking, along with attitudes and family models favoring alcohol use for problem solving, drinking much and frequently for personal rather than social effects, and little religious involvement
Expectations of Need Satisfaction and Drinking Patterns of College Students
