Estimates of earnings returns by field of study for-profit schools and community colleges
We estimate labor-market returns for students pursuing certificates or associate’s degrees in eight broad fields of study at for-profit institutions and community colleges. The data contain 400,000 students beginning their studies between 2005 and 2012 in one state. We estimate two-step models to address recent econometric concerns with two-way fixed-effects models. Our analyses show important differences in return by field, with similar patterns…
Taking a Knee: Effect of NFL Player Protests on Subsequent Employment and Earnings
Protesters sometimes face penalties for their actions, but few papers have attempted to quantify these penalties. We investigate whether the subsequent salaries and employment status of NFL players who took a knee or sat during the national anthem during the 2017 season differed from similar players who did not. We find limited evidence that they were penalized in terms of employment during the 2018 or 2019 seasons. Conditional on employment, we …
Early parental death and its association with children’s mental and economic well-being in adulthood: A nationwide population-based register study
BACKGROUND: This study examined the association between early parental death and children's subsequent mental health, years of schooling, and labour-market outcomes (ie, employment and earnings) in adulthood. METHODS: We used nationwide register-based data for Finnish citizens born between 1971 and 1986 (n=962 350). Logistic and linear regression models were used to examine the association of early parental death before the age of 21 years with s…
Labor Market Returns to the GED Using Regression Discontinuity Analysis
We evaluate returns to General Educational Development (GED) certification for high school dropouts using state administrative data. We apply a fuzzy regression discontinuity method to account for test takers retaking the test. For women we find that GED certification has no statistically significant effect on either employment or earnings. For men we find a significant increase in earnings in the second year after taking the test but no impact i…
The effect of sharing a mother tongue with peers: Evidence from North Carolina middle schools
This paper provides the first analysis of the relationship between the language mix of Limited English Proficient (LEP) peers and student achievement, using detailed panel data from 2006 to 2012. Percent LEP has a negative association with mathematics and reading test scores, more so for non-LEP students than for LEP students. The overall language mix of LEP students has little if any discernable relationship with achievement. For LEP students, h…
The Labor-Market Returns to Community College Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates
This article provides one of the first rigorous estimations of the labor-market returns to community college certificates and diplomas, as well as estimations of the returns to the more commonly studied associate’s degrees. Using administrative data from Kentucky, we estimate panel-data models that control for differences among students in precollege earnings and educational aspirations. Associate’s degrees and diplomas have quarterly earnings re…
Estimating the social value of higher education: Willingness to pay for community and technical colleges
Much is known about private financial returns to education in the form of higher earnings. Less is known about how much social value exceeds this private value. Associations between education and socially-desirable outcomes are strong, but disentangling the effect of education from other causal factors is challenging. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the social value of one form of higher education. We elicit willingness to pay for the Ke…
Are Catholic primary schools more effective than public primary schools
Miles to go before I learn: The effect of travel distance on the mature person's choice of a community college
Teacher characteristics and student achievement: Evidence from teacher surveys
The role of aggregation in estimating the effects of private school competition on student achievement
An Empirical Analysis of the Matching Patterns of Same-Sex and Opposite-Sex Couples
We used 1990 Census data to compare the matching behaviors of four types of cohabiting couples: same-sex male couples, same-sex female couples, opposite-sex unmarried couples, and married couples. In general, we found evidence of positive assortative mating for all traits and across all types of couples. The positive assortative mating, however, is stronger for non-labor-market traits (e.g., age, education) than for labor-market traits (e.g., hou…
