Semiparametric Estimation of First-Price Auction Models
In this article, we propose a two-step semiparametric procedure to estimate first-price auction models. In the first step, we estimate the bid density and distribution using local polynomial method, and recover a sample of (pseudo) private values. In the second step, we apply the method of moments to the sample of private values to estimate a finite set of parameters that characterize the density of private values. We show that our estimator atta…
Structural Analysis of Nonlinear Pricing
This paper proposes a new methodology for analyzing nonlinear pricing data. We establish identification of the model primitives with a known tariff and characterize the model restrictions on observables. We propose a quantile-based nonparametric estimator that achieves consistency at the parametric rate. We introduce unobserved product heterogeneity with an unknown tariff and show how our identification and estimation results extend. A Monte Carl…
Semiparametric Estimation of the Optimal Reserve Price in First-Price Auctions
The optimal reserve price in the independent private value paradigm is generally expressed as a functional of the latent distribution of private signals, which is by nature unobserved. This feature has limited the implementation of the optimal reserve price in practice. In this article, we consider rst-price auctions within the general af liated private values paradigm. We show that the seller’s expected pro t can be written as a functional of th…
Auctioning and Bargaining
This article considers a first-price sealed-bid auction at which the seller's reservation price is not announced in advance. We allow for a second round of bargaining and consider the Nash bargaining outcome when the object is unsold after the auctioning round. We characterize the bidders' and seller's Bayesian Nash equilibrium strategies. The distributions of the buyers' and seller's private values are estimated by nonlinear least squares from a…
L'évaluation contingente
Contingent valuation : controversial issues and perspectives In recent years, increasing public awareness of the detrimental effects of the economy on the environment has forced policymakers to assess the value of various public goods such as clean air and water, plant and animal species preservation, recreational sites and activities, scenic beauties, etc.... Over the last two decades, economists have developed and applied the method of continge…
Likelihood Ratio Tests for Model Selection and Non-Nested Hypotheses
In this paper, we develop a classical approach to model selection. Using the Kullback-Leibler Information Criterion to measure the closeness of a model to the truth, we propose simple likelihood-ratio based statistics for testing the null hypothesis that the competing models are equally close to the true data generating process against the alternative hypothesis that one model is closer. The tests are directional and are derived successively for …
Limited information estimators and exogeneity tests for simultaneous probit models
An Empirical Analysis of Backlog, Inventory, Production, and Price Adjustments
This article presents an empirical analysis of firms' order backlogs, inventories, production, and price adjustments to unanticipated demand shocks. The data are obtained from quarterly INSEE Business Survey Tests on firms' realizations, expectations, and appraisals of some various economic variables. The analysis is based on the formulation and the estimation of a recursive system of conditional log-linear probability models
