    Open Access•Kyungjae Jang, Sangkyun Kim•ARTICLE•Journal of Hospitality & Tourism…•2024

This study examines how a mediatized space becomes a “staged” place to play with, and provides a symbolic platform for performance-based, tourism experiences from a tour program design perspective. It focuses on the Detective Conan Mystery Tour, a derivative tourism product of Detective Conan, a Japanese mystery fiction media franchise. Applying the concept of “playscapes” as the theoretical lens, the findings indicate that creating fiction-drive…

    Kyungjae Jang•ARTICLE•Journal of Heritage Tourism•2024•Cited by: 5•References: 2

The increasing numbers of open-world games provide a sense of immersion, as if users were in a virtual world, by guaranteeing free movement within that world. One example is Ghost of Tsushima, a game developed by Sucker Punch Productions in the United States and released in 2020. The game was created by adding fictional elements to the historical facts surrounding the Mongol Empire’s invasion of the Japanese island of Tsushima in 1274. The develo…

Historical literature and contemporar…

  • Dark tourism as educational tourism: The case of ‘hope tourism’ in Fukushima, Japan

Kyungjae Jang, Kengo Sakamoto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Heritage Tourism•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 1

This article examines how dark tourism has been adopted and developed in Japan and suggests how it can be linked to educational tourism, through the case of a ‘Hope Tourism Guided Tour’ held in Fukushima in 2018. In Japan, dark tourism has developed into a new form, nested within educational tourism (or an educational tourism that contains elements of dark tourism within it). This is connected to the long history of educational tourism and to the…

This chapter illustrates the process and structures of creating mediatized “sacred sites” of pop culture in the Internet age via what we term “creative fandom” (fan communities with active creativity). Through these two cases of Japanese game/animation The Idolmaster (2005) fans visiting Yayoiken Restaurant in Takatsuki city, Osaka, Japan, and the fan-made sacred site of the Japanese anime film Kiki’s Delivery Service in Tasmania, Australia, this…

  • Tourism and local identity generated by NHK’s morning drama: The intersection of memory and imagination in Kobe

Kyungjae Jang•ARTICLE•East Asian Journal of Popular…•2019

This article shows how the interplay of local memories, the imagined worlds of media products and tourism can redefine the image of a particular place. Using the concepts of ‘places of memory’ (Nora) and ‘places of the imagination’ (Reijnders), the author analyses how NHK’s morning drama (asadora) Kazamidori (The Weather Vane) (1977–1978) had a significant impact on the development of Kobe’s Kitanochō district. The fusion of local memory and the …
