LGBTQ+ Studies in Music Education
Within the profession of music education, there has been a call for researchers to investigate topics of equity, diversity, and social justice, specifically regarding LGBTQ+ populations. Several content analyses have been conducted in the field of music education with topics including content at national music organizations’ conferences (Ebie, 2002; Elliott & Moody, 1998; Orman & Price, 2007), content published in research journals (e.g., Yarbrou…
A Content Analysis of the Journal of Band Research
The purpose of this study was to conduct a content analysis of the Journal of Band Research since its inception in 1964 through 2016, a 52-year period. Scholarly articles (N = 503) were reviewed and independently coded to determine the type of methodology used in research, topic of the article, and author eminence within the journal. The coding procedure resulted in the creation of 12 separate methodological categories and 25 primary topics. Hist…
Effects of Ensemble Size and Repertoire Difficulty on Ratings of Concert Band Performances
The purpose of this study was to examine effects of ensemble size and repertoire difficulty on listeners’ perceptions of concert band performances. Undergraduate music majors ( N = 210) viewed an audiovisual stimulus consisting of various images of large and small concert bands paired with identical audio performances of either an easy or difficult composition. Participants rated each ensemble’s tone quality/intonation, musicianship/expression, a…
A Neurophenomenological Investigation of Mindfulness Among Collegiate Musicians
We investigated the efficacy of a phenomenological matrix of mindfulness as a framework for examining expectations, formal meditation experiences, and appraisals of first-year college music students ( N = 18) who participated in a 5-day mindfulness module offered through an introductory course in music education. Participants expressed hopes that meditation would help them manage stress and anxiety, improve their focus and relationships, and supp…
Perspectives of a Transgender Music Education Student
The purpose of this study was to present a narrative account of one gender-variant music student and his experiences as a music education major at a small private college. The question guiding this study was as follows: In what ways can one transgender music education student’s lived experiences and identity development inform discourse in the music education community? A semistructured interview protocol was used, with approximately 14 weekly on…
Music Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Transgender Students and Supportive School Practices
The purpose of this study was to measure music teachers’ attitudes toward transgender individuals and toward school practices that support transgender students. Participants ( N = 612) included men and women who teach a variety of music subjects in elementary, middle, and high schools, in urban, suburban, and rural areas. An online questionnaire was distributed to participants representing 28 states in the United States. The questionnaire consist…
Hazing in the College Marching Band
The purpose of this study was to investigate hazing in collegiate marching bands. Specifically, the researchers were interested in marching band students’ experiences with hazing behaviors, to whom they were reported, attitudes toward hazing, and level of awareness of institutional hazing policies. Using a multistage cluster sampling approach, we distributed an online questionnaire to college marching band members attending National Collegiate At…
The Perception of Pacing in a Music Appreciation Class and Its Relationship to Teacher Effectiveness and Teacher Intensity
The purpose of this study was to determine relationships among pacing, teacher effectiveness, and teacher intensity in the context of a realistic teaching situation. A scripted stimulus video was created in which the teacher demonstrated predefined pacing lapses to measure their effects on observers’ ratings of teacher effectiveness, teacher intensity, teacher pacing, and general perceptions. Participants ( N = 164 college students) were randomly…

Excluding editorials, paper responses, and book reviews, 1,293 articles were examined, resulting in 286 (22%) publications that met criteria for fur…
