Ethnic Majority/Minority Status
This study is an examination of the effect of classroom ethnic majority/minority status on third-, fifth-, and seventh-grade children's ( N = 118) interactions and affective responses while these children listened to and discussed a Latin salsa artist, an African-American rhythm and blues artist, and a European-American folk artist. Classroom ethnic-group proportions determined African-American and European-American children's classroom status. T…
Music Courses for Elementary Education Majors
We prepared a survey instrument to determine the purpose, format, and content of courses available to undergraduate elementary education majors at institutions accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). We examined the types of music courses offered to elementary classroom teachers, the content of the courses, the instructor's purpose for each course, and factors that influenced curricular decisions. We mailed the question…
Pictorial versus Verbal Rating Scales in Music Preference Measurement
Participants from Grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 ( N = 238) rated selections on an 18-item music listening tape four consecutive times at 2-week intervals, alternately using pictorial and verbal Likert-type response scales. The order of response scale administration was counterbalanced among the classrooms involved. There was no significant difference between preference scores generated by participants using either form of response scale. Test-retest reli…
The Effect of Instruction on Music Educators' Attitudes toward Students with Disabilities
Before and after completing a university course for teaching music to special education learners, master's-level music education students ( N = 18) were given a measure examining their attitudes toward students with disabilities. The survey instrument consisted of 20 statements describing five different groups of students; these were learners with emotional, physical, multiple, mental, or no impairments. The participants were directed to indicate…
Effects of Listeners' and Performers' Race on Music Preferences
This study's purpose was to examine the effects of black and white listeners' and performers' race on music preferences. On a Likert-type rating scale, middle-school (n = 102) and university (n =119) listeners indicated how much they liked or disliked 20 taped music examples. On a second rating scale, the listeners selected a point closest to the racial identifier that they believed described the performer's race. A second measurement examined th…
Acquiring Criteria of Excellence for Scholarly Journals in Music
We selected 24 journals to represent scholarly publication in the academic fields of music in the United States. We then contacted each editor, along with two members of each journals editorial committee and 48 publishing scholars whose work has appeared in these journals, asking them to identify the characteristics of an excellent scholarly journal in their own field of music. While some responses were specific to individual branches of music sc…
Motivation and Perceived Rewards for Research by Music Faculty
A questionnaire was sent to 90 publishing researchers who were members of college music faculties in the fields of music theory, music history, music education, and music therapy asking them why they engaged in research activity and what specific rewards they believe they obtained because of their own research. Among the 55 respondents, intellectual curiosity, enjoyment, self-improvement, and perceived duty were the main reasons for conducting re…
Tempo Preferences of Different Age Music Listeners
The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of four levels of tempo on the self-reported preferences of six different age-groups for traditional jazz music listening examples. The authors administered a listening test to 926 students in 45 classrooms from third grade through college level in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Test reliability was evaluated in terms of internal consistency, student behavior was observed during the test, and free-r…

A listening test was administered to 163 students in seven classrooms in south central Michigan. Test reliability was evaluated in terms of common factor concentration, student behavior was observed during the test, and free response data were solicited from students at the end of the …
