Experienced P-12 Music Teachers’ Evolving Approaches to Classroom Management
This qualitative study examines how experienced P-12 music teachers’ classroom management has evolved over two decades, shaped by trauma-informed and culturally responsive pedagogies. Earlier music education research often promoted rigid rules and punitive responses, frequently without cultural or contextual sensitivity. Recent scholarship instead emphasizes relational pedagogies grounded in students’ identities, lived experiences, and sociocultu…

John within Judaism: Religion, Ethnicity, and the Shaping of Jesus-Oriented Jewishness in the Fourth Gospel, written by Wally V. Cirafesi
With this revised University of Oslo thesis, Wally Cirafesi extends the recent movement to interpret the New Testament "within Judaism" to the Gospel of John.He challenges the outdated "Jewish background" approach, proposing instead to interpret the gospel amid a broad spectrum of ancient Jewish patterns of thought.Chapter one introduces the book by surveying the problem of "John and Judaism," that is, how to make sense of the gospel's negative d…

Eve as Cyborg: The Eden Myth as a Blueprint for Artificial Women
The essay argues that the figure of the female cyborg introduced by Donna Haraway has yet to live up to its post-gender emancipatory promise. Both Haraway and Jack Halberstam contrast the female cyborg with the biblical Eve and her mythic origins in the garden of Eden. I argue that the figure of Eve is actually an ancient precursor to the female cyborg. Even more than the Greek myth of Pygmalion, the Eden myth shares common elements with later st…

Sex and Slaughter in the Tent of Jael: A Cultural History of a Biblical Story
"This book traces the retelling of the biblical story from Judges 4-5 in ancient retellings of the Bible, visual art, poems, plays, and novels. The books shows how these cultural productions of an old biblical story intersect with broader conversations about the often conflicted, and sometimes violent, relationship between women and men"
Ancient Stories of Jael and Sisera
The chapter critically examines the two versions of the Jael and Sisera tradition found in Judges 4 and 5. It argues that the poetic account and the prose account offer two different accounts of the tradition, pointing to the cultural history of retelling this story already evident in the Bible. The chapter then traces scholarly lines of interpretations of the biblical accounts. These include an ongoing interest in tradition’s combination of sex …

Gender and Divine Relativity in Philo of Alexandria
Philo's apparent divinization of Moses is considered vis-à-vis ancient conceptions of gender. Philo's Moses is a perfect illustration of the ideology of masculinity evident in a wide range of Greco-Roman literature. Moreover, with Philo's Moses, perfect masculinity is commensurate with divinity, but both remain relative to the "asexual masculinity" of God
