  • Lateralization of Components of Melodic Stimuli

    Open Access•Roger Baumgarte, Elda Franklin•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Using dichotic listening methodology, 25 musicians and 25 nonmusicians were compared on four cerebral lateralization tasks: melodies, tonal patterns, rhythm patterns, and verbal stimuli. Musicians demonstrated superior performance on the music tasks with regard to overall scores, degree of improvement during a second administration of the tasks, and number of test trials for which both left and right ear items were correctly identified. No group …

  • Auditory Laterality Effects for Melodic Stimuli Among Musicians and Nonmusicians

    Open Access•Elda Franklin, Roger Baumgarte•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1978•Cited by: 1•References: 1

A dichotic melody recognition task was employed to determine cerebral lateralization of melodic stimuli among musicians and nonmusicians. The non-musicians revealed a significant left ear (right hemisphere) strength for the recognition of test melodies. The left ear effect among musicians was found to be related to the subject's area of music specialization. Singers demonstrated a significant left ear superiority for melody recognition, whereas e…
