A Comparison of Listeners' Musical Cognition Using a Continuous Response Assessment
The purpose of this study was to assess the degree to which listeners can discern if melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic parameters and pairings of these parameters are abstracted from the ongoing flow of a musical event. A Content Analysis of Doctoral Research in String Education, 1936–1992
The purpose of this study was to analyze the contents of doctoral research written between 1936 and 1992 that related to string education. A search of the Dissertation Abstracts International (DAI) index of dissertations revealed 252 dissertations concerning string education. These dissertation titles and abstracts were analyzed for year of completion, type of degree, instrument, and nine topic areas. Results indicated that the greatest numbers o…
String Instrument Intonation in Upper and Lower Registers: The Effects of Accompaniment
The effects of different accompaniment and register conditions on string instrumentalists' intonation performance of scalar passages were investigated. Forty-eight college-aged instrumentalists (12 each of violinists, violists, cellists, and double bassists) performed ascending and descending whole-tone tetrachords in the instruments' upper and lower registers.
