An Assessment of the Classroom Performance of Music Teachers
Information from a statewide norming study of all teachers was used to compare the I performance of music teachers and other teachers on 10 competencies and a variety of classroom behaviors. Music teachers' competency scores were below the mean for all teachers on 7 of the 10 competencies; however, music teachers' scores on specific classroom behaviors showed virtually no difference from those of other teachers on 94 of the 117 behaviors included…
Public School Music Teachers' Perceptions of the Effect of Certain Competencies on Pupil Learning
A list of competencies was developed and rated by 201 public school music teachers. Fifty-one competencies were classified as musical, and 59 were identified as teaching competencies. General music, instrumental, and choral teachers rated the competencies in terms of their effect on pupil learning. Competencies were ranked on the basis of the mean rating. Teaching Effectiveness in Elementary Classroom Music
Relationships among selected attribute variables, pupil achievement and attitude gains, and certain teaching competency measures were studied in 29 elementary music classes over a school year during which pre- and posttests in achievement and attitude were administered. Systematic observation of classroom interactions was made, and five competencies were found to correlate with achievement gains at magnitudes ranging from .20 to .32. Only one com…

The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of children's concepts of volume, tempo, duration, and pitch. The specific goals were to determine the effects of grade level, instructional mode, and task variables on performance of music concept tasks.
