Evaluation of a sex-positive, youth-centred online pornography literacy intervention for adolescents
A range of pornography literacy programmes and interventions exist to address some of the developmental concerns prompted by adolescent pornography use. Interventions to date have typically developed in line within a harm reduction approach. However, contemporary youth-centred frameworks for literacy more generally suggest that pornography literacy interventions could also contribute towards more positive outcomes for adolescents. However, this h…

Sexual Harassment in the UK Music Industry
The current study presents survey findings on experiences of sexual harassment (SH) among individuals working in the wider UK music industry. Data from 467 respondents showed that 95.5% of women and 70% of men reported SH. Gender was the most significant determinant of sexual harassment, with women reporting more instances of SH than men. The most significant effects were seen in relation to sexist and sexual remarks, sexual staring, and unwanted…
“How Am I Going to Do It?” Understanding the Challenges of Assuming Care of a Child Born During their Mothers’ Incarceration
Objectives: Mass incarceration of women systematically targets minoritized groups. Approximately 1,000 births occur from prison annually; and most children must be cared for by someone other than their mother. Little is known about caregiving for infants in the context of maternal incarceration. The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of caregivers assuming care of newborns of incarcerated mothers to identify challenges and prov…
Barriers and recommendations for parent–child conversations about pornography

Solving women’s voices? A theoretical framework for talking through the algorithm
This article offers a four-dimensional framework for analyzing technologies of gendered voice, especially those which have sought to correct or “solve” the supposedly unruly, unpleasant, or otherwise problematic voices of women. While modern technologies such as artificially intelligent assistants Siri and Alexa implement digital algorithms for cultivating feminine voices, this framework insists upon a broad conceptualization of algorithms to con…

Patterns of Sexual Harassment
This study explores how identifying with multiple minority groups relates to sexual harassment victimization (SHV) among students in higher education institutions in Ireland ( n = 6,002). Results show that gender nonconforming and female students were more likely than males to experience SHV. Bisexual or queer and gay or lesbian students were more likely than their heterosexual peers to experience SHV. Students with a physical or cognitive disabi…
Development of a Measure to Assess What Young Heterosexual Adults Say They Learn About Sex from Pornography
This study involved the development of two new measures to assess what some young heterosexual-identifying adults report learning about sex from pornography. Inventory items were generated from an extensive literature review and six qualitative focus group sessions with young adults ( N = 54) aged 18–29 which explored how pornography could be used as a source of sexual information. A total of 135 items pertaining to sexual learning from pornograp…

Using vignette methodology to study comfort with consensual and nonconsensual depictions of pornography content
Spanking, whipping, and choking are examples of aggressive behaviours that can be performed in consensual sexual encounters. However, within the pornography research literature, such behaviours are often perceived as being nonconsensual, categorised as ‘violent’, and argued to predict sexual aggression. Viewing nonconsensual pornography may be associated with negative attitudes towards consent; however, viewing consensual pornography that feature…
Dissatisfaction with school sex education is not associated with using pornography for sexual information
This study explored the frequently held belief that pornography use for sexual information occurs in the absence of good sex education and examined whether such a relationship was moderated by a person’s sexual orientation. A more general goal for the study was to explore pornography viewing habits of Irish university students. Cross-sectional quantitative data were collected from a convenience sample of Irish university students, aged 18–24 year…
Adolescent sexual aggressiveness and pornography use
The rising prevalence of (online) pornography use among, mostly male, adolescents revived social concerns regarding possible effects of pornography use on sexual aggressiveness. Given the paucity of longitudinal explorations of this link, this study focused on the following two research questions: (Q1) Is pornography use during middle to late adolescence related to male adolescents' self-reported sexual aggressiveness; and (Q2) can personality tr…
Toward a Model of Porn Literacy
Although some positive outcomes for pornography engagement have been highlighted, researchers and educators have also expressed concerns about youth pornography engagement and have called for porn literacy education to be incorporated into sex education programs. As yet, there is lack of agreement regarding intervention development. This study aimed to engage participants in the identification of relevant curriculum content. Participatory methods…
