  • Enhancing Argumentation and Decision-Making of Preservice Early Childhood Education Teachers Through Role-Playing on Animal Experimentation

    Open Access•Juan José Vicente, Antonio-Joaquín Franco-Mariscal et al.•ARTICLE•Science & Education•2025

This study explores the socio-scientific issue of the relevance of animal experimentation using a role-playing game to develop argumentation and decision-making skills as key components of critical thinking. The activity was conducted with two cohorts, each consisting of 30 pre-service early childhood education teachers at the University of Málaga (Málaga, Spain). The study analyzes the arguments provided by the participants to justify their deci…

  • Emotions Experienced by Preservice Early Childhood Teachers During a Training Program in Inquiry‐Based Science Education

    Open Access•María Marta Alarcón‐Orozco, Antonio-Joaquín Franco-Mariscal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Science…•2025•References: 75

The influence of emotions on teaching –learning processes is a topic of increasing interest in science education research. This study explores the emotions experienced by 121 preservice early childhood teachers during a training program in inquiry‐based science education. Using a checklist of nine emotions (both positive and negative), participants indicated the emotions they experienced at three stages of the instruction: at the outset, after ex…

  • Model-based analysis of the impact of a teaching-learning sequence about carbonated drinks on students’ understanding of the dissolution of gases in liquids

    Joaquín Cañero-Arias, Ángel Blanco‐López et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Science…•2024

This research integrates context-based learning and modelling. It presents a teaching-learning sequence (TLS) about the dissolution of gases in liquids using carbonated drinks as the context. The impact of the TLS is analysed in a longitudinal short-term study involving two groups of learners aged 13–14 years old (n=53). The results led us to infer five models explaining how carbon dioxide is distributed in a carbonated soft drink, categorized an…

  • Study on the progression of pre-service primary school teachers’ models regarding the phenomenon of tides

María Armario, José María Oliva et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Science…•2024•References: 1

The progress achieved in the models used by future Spanish primary school teachers on the phenomenon of tides is analysed after implementing a modelling-based didactic sequence. It was implemented throughout ten sessions in two classes (N = 88). An open-ended questionnaire was used as a data collecting instrument. Based on prior studies and the information gathered in this instrument, a holistic rubric was created to characterise the models used …

  • A theoretical framework to address education for sustainability for an earlier transition to a just, low carbon and circular economy

Chiara Scalabrino, Antonio Navarrete Salvador et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The evolution to a just, Low Carbon and Circular Economy could be accelerated if additional education and training professionals embraced the practical implications of terms such as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) or for Sustainability (ES). Therefore, this study identified the numerous elements of Environmental and Sustainability Education that are relevant to effectively encourage the implementation of Sustainable Consumption and Pr…

  • Development of a questionnaire for assessing Spanish‐speaking students' understanding of the nature of models and their uses in science

Open Access•José María Oliva, Ángel Blanco‐López•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Science…•2021

The translation and adaptation of an assessment instrument into another language can be problematic, due, among other reasons, to sociocultural differences. This proved to be the case with the Spanish adaptation of the Students' Understanding of Models in Science (SUMS) questionnaire, a Likert‐type scale developed originally in English. In light of this, and with the additional aim of improving upon certain aspects of the original instrument, we …

  • Comment on ‘expectancy of life at birth in 36 nationalities of the Soviet Union

    José María Oliva, P J Grandstaff et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1972

In D. Peter Mazur's recent article, 'Expectancy of Life at Birth in 36 Nationalities of the Soviet Union: 1958-1960', crude rates of death and expectancies of life for nationalities are derived from a scant base of data that includes crude rates of natural increase for administrative units and various ratios of composition of the populations of both administrative units and nationalities. Students of Soviet demography genuinely appreciate Mazur's…
