Imagined Conversations with Caribbean Poets
This essay investigates the web of capitalism, property, empire, and incarceration as it contemplates the work of two twenty-first-century poets, Roque Raquel Salas Rivera and José Ramón Sánchez Leyva, based in Puerto Rico and Cuba, respectively. Salas Rivera's collection Lo terciario / The Tertiary interrogates the Puerto Rican debt crisis, and While They Sleep (Under the Bed Is Another Country) focuses on the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
Age‐related changes in myelin of axons of the corpus callosum and cognitive decline in common marmosets
Executive control is a higher-level cognitive function that involves a range of different processes that are involved in the planning, coordination, execution, and inhibition of responses. Many of the processes associated with executive control, such as response inhibition and mental flexibility, decline with age. Degeneration of white matter architecture is considered to be the one of the key factors underlying cognitive decline associated with …
Cross‐sectional comparison of health‐span phenotypes in young versus geriatric marmosets
The development of the marmoset as a translational model for healthspan and lifespan studies relies on the characterization of health parameters in young and geriatric marmosets. This cross‐sectional study examined health phenotypes in marmosets for five domains of interest for human health and aging: mobility, cognition, metabolism, homeostasis, and immune function. Geriatric marmosets were found to have significant executive function impairment…

Using Community-Based Participatory Research and Human-Centered Design to Address Violence-Related Health Disparities Among Latino/a Youth
High rates of exposure to violence and other adversities among Latino/a youth contribute to health disparities. The current article addresses the ways in which community-based participatory research (CBPR) and human-centered design (HCD) can help engage communities in dialogue and action. We present a project exemplifying how community forums, with researchers, practitioners, and key stakeholders, including youths and parents, integrated HCD stra…
Wounds of Returning
From Storyville brothels and narratives of turn-of-the-century New Orleans to plantation tours, Bette Davis films, Elvis memorials, Willa Cather's fiction, and the annual prison rodeo held at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, Jessica Adams considers spatial and ideological evolutions of southern plantations after slavery. In Wounds of Returning, Adams shows that the slave past returns to inhabit plantation landscapes that have been radi…
The Wildest Show in the South”
Since 1967, prisoners doing hard time at the Louisiana State Penitentiary have volunteered to take part in a rodeo staged for tourists. Few of the inmates have ever ridden a horse before, much less a bucking bronco or bull. Is this spectacle of criminalized bodies per-forming under duress “fun” or public torture
Local Color
In gift shop at San Francisco plantation, outside small town of Reserve, Louisiana, one finds usual selection of pralines, postcards, and trinkets bearing images of Confederate flag. In addition, on counter immediately next to cash register, like candy and tabloids at supermarket, is a display of small plastic figures labeled Black People. Like plantation owners of days, tourists can purchase blacks to take home; these are easily transportable, a…
