How fast is fast and how slow is slow in mental simulation? Two rating studies on Estonian speed adverbs
The study explores the language-cognition interface through the semantics of Estonian speed adverbs. It hypothesizes that fastness, being more intense than slowness, is reflected in how adverbs are processed. The expectations are that fast adverbs (e.g., kiiresti ‘fast’) are attributed more extreme speed values than slow adverbs (e.g., aeglaselt ‘slowly’) and that meaning intensification through word formation (reduplication, simile compounding, …
The fast-over-slow asymmetry
Linguistic asymmetries have been of great interest in much research and continue to provide intriguing insights into the working mechanisms of language. Focusing on the domain of speed , we explore the structure of Estonian speed adverbs and provide evidence for the fast-over-slow asymmetry – the tendency for fastness to be expressed more extensively than slowness. As a pre-study, in which we combined dictionary lookup, corpus and rating methods,…
Speed as a dimension of manner in Estonian frog stories
Focusing on the expression of manner and path in the ‘frog story’ narrations of Estonian native speakers, this study shows that Estonian – a morphologically rich satellite-framed Finno-Ugric language – is characterised by high manner and high path salience. Furthermore, when analysing one of the core qualities of manner – speed – we show that when the participants were asked to narrate a story as if the events developed slowly, they also spoke sl…

Kas moos ja buss seisavad endiselt? seisma -verbi polüseemia ja seismise kehaline kogemus
Artiklis käsitleme asendiverbi seisma polüseemiat. Kasutame mõisteliste tunnuste hindamise katset uurimaks, kuidas eesti keele kõnelejad seisma eri tähendusi tajuvad. Palusime eesti keele kõnelejatel hinnata seisma tähenduste seotust viie tunnusega, mis peegeldavad füüsilise seismise kogemust: vertikaalsus, kontakt, tasakaal, võimelisus ja liikumisvõime. Kasutasime katses samu lauseid nagu Renate Pajusalu (2001a. Kas moos ja buss seisavad sarnase…
Manner of motion in Estonian
Recent decades have witnessed an increasing interest in motion events resulting in thorough knowledge about expressions of manner. However, the individual dimensions of manner of motion have been investigated less extensively. In this study, we focus on one particular dimension of manner: speed . By analysing the Estonian language and applying corpus methods, we show that speed is one of the core dimensions of manner. In Estonian, speed can be ex…
Sise- ja väliskohakäänete kasutus määratlejaga nimisõnafraasides
In this paper, we investigate the Estonian spatial cases by comparing the use of inner spatial cases (i.e., the in-cases) and outer spatial cases (i.e., the on-cases). We focus on two-word phrases in which a demonstrative pronoun or an adverb precedes the noun (e.g., selles/siin majas â in this house (here)â , sellel/siin lehel â on this page (here)â ). The material is taken from the Estonian National Corpus 2017 and contains an equal number of s…
A perceptual study of language chunking in Estonian
Two studies investigate the production and perception of speech chunks in Estonian. A corpus study examines to what degree the boundaries of syntactic constituents and frequent collocations influence the distribution of prosodic information in spontaneously spoken utterances. A perception experiment tests to what degree prosodic information, constituent structure, and collocation frequencies interact in the perception of speech chunks. Two groups…
Speed and space
In this study, we investigate the expression of speed—one of the principal dimensions of manner—in relation to the expression of space in Estonian, a satellite-framed and morphology-rich language. Our multivariate and extensive corpus analysis is informed by asymmetries attested in languages with regard to expressing space (the goal-over-source bias) and speed (the fast-over-slow bias) where we attempt to explicitly link the two. We demonstrate m…
Demonstratiivpronoomenid ja -adverbid määratlejatena. Miks me oleme siin ilmas, selles olukorras

Eesti keele verbide semantilisest liigitamisest
Seetõttu on demonstratiivid maailma keeleteaduses eri vaatenurkadest pälvinud võrdlemisi suurt tähelepanu (vt nt Fillmore 1975, 1997; Lyons 1977; Karmiloff-Smith 1979; Clark jt 1983; Levinson 1983; Gundel jt 1993; Laury 1997; Diessel 1999a, 1999b, 2006; Dixon 2003; Enfield 2003; Kemmerer 2006; Coventry jt 2008; Leu 2008; [...]
