Healers, bureaucracy and the power of narrative: Navigating the medical profession in Prussia, circa 1800
This article examines how municipal physicians and surgeons in late eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century Prussia employed narrative as a means to navigate, negotiate and, at times, reshape the medical bureaucracy. I argue that narratives themselves functioned as active instruments of agency. My case study comprises 37 application processes in various towns of the Prussian provinces of Neumark and Kurmark, spanning roughly 170 individua…
Anthropology from the Margins: The Craniological Network of Carl Gustav Carus
This paper examines the role of Carl Gustav Carus within the emerging field of physical anthropology during the mid-nineteenth century. Despite his extensive connections with contemporary anthropologists, Carus’s craniological approach was increasingly marginalized, ultimately excluding him from the foundational phase of German anthropology. Reconstructing Carus’s craniological network from largely unpublished correspondence, this study presents …
Sick Houses: Towards a Transnational History of Housing Hygiene Surveys, 1889–1913
Between 1889 and 1913, housing took centre stage in hygiene enquiries. Countless surveys across Europe sought to identify specific housing problems as health hazards. This paper explores the art of housing hygiene surveys in Belgium, France and Germany. Scrutinising surveys from Berlin, Liège and Paris, I characterise two contesting survey methods. On one hand, large-scale statistical surveys such as the sanitary register of houses in Paris aimed…
Figures of Misery: The Berlin Housing Survey (1901-1920) as an Epistemic Project
From 1901 until 1920, Albert Kohn, director of the Berlin insurance organization Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse, conducted a systematic housing survey of defective apartments. The work included statistics, reports, and photographs. I situate the project within the context of social surveys in the years around 1900. In the larger history of housing surveys, Kohn’s project was one of the first that amalgamated diverse media and data visualizations. Th…
Life Writing as Micropolitics: Prussian CVs at the Dawn of Bureaucratic Meritocracy
In the late eighteenth century, European administrations saw the emergence of the Curriculum Vitae (CV) as a medium for job applications. These developments led civil servants who applied for employment to write about the merits of their careers. Focusing on Prussia and drawing on Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of ‘micropolitics’, I argue that the ‘meritocratisation’ of the civil service produced a competitive climate that prompted m…
This article analyses curricula vitae (CVs) submitted in the context of applications in the Prussian civil service in the Rhineland after 1815. The rhetoric of the CVs was multivalent. First, candidates presented their claims to a post via a narrative of their fate during the long period of Napoleonic rule. Secondly, applicants stylised their willingness to make sacrifices during the ‘wars of liberation’ as a sacred dedication to the ‘fatherland’…
Organizing careers for work – The curriculum vitae (CV) in Prussia’s technical bureaucracy, c. 1770-1830
This paper explores the history of the curriculum vitae (CV) as a medium of job application in the Prussian technical bureaucracy around 1800. A document that so far has not received much attention in historiographical works, appeared as a major tool for bureaucratic innovation at the end of the eighteenth century. Drawing on primary archival sources, this paper will raise three major points. First, the curriculum vitae facilitated the depiction …
