  • Noticing, identifying and discriminating sociolinguistic variants in England

Open Access•Erik Schleef, EVELYN N ROTH et al.•ARTICLE•English Language and Linguistics•2026

This article explores the extent to which listeners vary in their ability to notice, identify and discriminate variable linguistic features. With a view to improving speaker evaluation studies (SES), three types of experiments were conducted ( noticing tasks , identification tasks and discrimination tasks ) with regard to variable features using word- or sentence-based stimuli and focusing on three variables and their variants – (ING): [ɪŋ], [ɪn]…

  • Sociolinguistic Competence in Curricula, Teacher Cognition, and Classroom Practice

    Open Access•Jana Pflaeging, Erik Schleef•ARTICLE•Languages•2026

Sociolinguistic competence (SC) has been recognised as essential for Communicative Language Teaching since the 1970s and features prominently in policy documents like the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Research demonstrates that explicit, systematic instruction effectively develops learners’ SC. While the academic case for SC in language teaching remains strong, we identify significant weaknesses and barriers to its …

  • Frequency-Based Professionalism Evaluation of ( ing ) and ( t )-Deletion in England and Pennsylvania

Open Access•Erik Schleef, Blair Mackay et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of English Linguistics•2025

This study investigates the social evaluation of linguistic variation and the cognitive monitoring processes involved. Recognizing the need for cross-regional research that keeps experimental factors constant, we focus on ( ing ) and ( t )-deletion. We investigate frequency evaluation as managed in England, UK ( N = 200), and in Pennsylvania, US ( N = 150). Results for ( ing ) indicate no significant effect of [ɪn]-frequency in England, while in …

  • Sociolinguistic monitoring and L2 speakers of English

Open Access•Jana Pflaeging, Blair Mackay et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2025•References: 29

This study contributes to a growing body of research on the social meanings of linguistic variation with particular interest in the cognitive processes governing their emergence. Our research follows in the tradition of Labov et al.’s (2011) work on the sociolinguistic monitor, a cognitive mechanism hypothesized to track quantitative linguistic variation and prompt social evaluations (Labov et al. 2011. Properties of the sociolinguistic monitor. …

  • Diachronic multimodality research – a mini-review

    Open Access•Jana Pflaeging•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2024

This mini-review gives an overview of diachronic multimodality research, an approach that multimodality scholars have pursued only rarely so far. Acknowledging the comparably large share of case studies in this line of research, this paper sets out by surveying empirical contributions. Many of them also provide discussions of selected theoretical and methodological aspects, which are subsequently collated and complemented with concepts from a num…

  • Multimodal Coherence Revisited

    Open Access•Hartmut Stöckl, Jana Pflaeging•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2022

The present paper proposes a preliminary annotation framework for the study of multimodal coherence in print ads. The framework is firmly based on a review of current theorizing on multimodal cohesion and coherence. Following guidelines for good empirical practice, the annotation scheme is tested on 50 ad samples, seeking to illustrate genre-specific qualities of multimodal coherence and to identify difficulties in applying conceptual frameworks …

  • Tracing The Shapes of Multimodal Rhetoric

    Open Access•Jana Pflaeging, Hartmut Stöckl•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This visual essay seeks to substantiate and illustrate the tenet that formal–structural elements in graphic design carry rhetorical functions. Based on a National Geographic feature article, the authors demonstrate methods for ‘measuring’ layout, colour and typography, and show the results in infographic visualizations. At the same time, the study showcases the epistemic value of these visualizations. The perspective adopted puts the double-page …

  • Multimodality

John A Bateman, John Bateman et al.•BOOK•Multimodality•2017

This textbook provides the first foundational introduction to the practice of analysing multimodality, covering the full breadth of media and situations in which multimodality needs to be a concern. Readers learn via use cases how to approach any multimodal situation and to derive their own specifically tailored sets of methods for conducting and evaluating analyses. Extensive references and critical discussion of existing approaches from many di…
