Dream as a Philosophical Vision
This article examines dreams as a form of mystical and philosophical self-reflection in the works of the sixteenth-century Crimean Sufi Ibrahim al-Kirimi (c. 1520–1593). Drawing on the Arabic original of his magnum opus “The Gifts of the All-Merciful in Understanding the Degrees of Being”, as well as related manuscript materials, the study presents Ukrainian translations of selected dream narratives accompanied by historical and philosophical com…
Tafsir for the Crimean Khan and Ottoman Sultan
This research explores the exegetical legacy of Ibrāhīm al-Qirīmī/İbrâhim el-Kırımî (d. 1593) a prominent 16th century Crimean Sufi scholar affiliated with the Halveti order and closely connected to Ottoman Sultan Murad III. Although often overlooked in the broader landscape of Islamic intellectual history, al-Qirīmī’s writings (particularly his Qur’anic commentary on the “Light Verse”, (Q. 24:35) reveal an important synthesis of Ibn ‘Arabī-inspi…
The Kingdom and the Qur’an
This book presents a detailed analysis of the translation of the Qur’an in Saudi Arabia, the most important global actor in the promotion, production and dissemination of Qur’an translations. Mykhaylo Yakubovych provides a comprehensive historical overview of the debates surrounding the translatability of the Qur'an, as well as exploring the impact of the burgeoning translation and dissemination of the holy book upon Wahhabi and Salafi interpreta…
Qaddafi's Hidden History? The Libyan World Islamic Call Society's Editions and Translations of the Qur'an
One of the most important developments in modern Islamic missionary activism was the establishment in 1972 of the Libya‐based World Islamic Call Society (WICS, originally the Islamic Call Society) which acted as a leading think tank advocating Muslim unity and Pan‐Arabism throughout the Qaddafi era. Despite the severe challenges facing post‐revolutionary Libya, WICS remains active today, albeit with reduced global visibility. This article demonst…

Qur'an Translations into Central Asian Languages
One of the most important issues when studying Qur’an translation is the question of the extent to which the translation process is informed by a specific hermeneutical strategy. By analysing three translations published by one of the most active international actors in this area, the King Fahd Qur’an Printing Complex in Medina, the current study is an exploratory attempt to systematise common features of Qur’an translations produced for Central …
First Vernacular Tafsir in the Caucasus
The Azerbaijani language (also referred as Azerbaijani Turkish) is one of the most important languages of Islam in the South Caucasus region. Nowadays spoken by at least 25 million people in the Republic of Azerbaijan, Iran and Georgia, usage of Azerbaijani as a vernacular language has played an important role in the rise of Islamic reformism in the area during the first decade of the 20th century and, almost a century later, in the Islamic reviv…
Ottoman Qur’anic Studies
Among the big corpus of the commentaries over the Qur’an, one of the special developments was a genre of gloss (hāšiya). The study addresses main Ottoman glosses written to the Qur’anic commentaries, contextualizing it within the internal dimensions of the content transformations. It is argued that since the glosses were used as the textbooks in the Ottoman medrese, they could be considered as the “mainstream” Ottoman reading of the Qur’an. This …
Asırda Kırımlı Âlimler ve Kadızadeli Geleneği
Kadizadelism is one of the most interesting religious movements in the Ottoman Empire. Researchers have mostly focused their studies on its early history, considering 17th century as the formative period with the subsequent florescence. In this study, I examine a sub-tradition in the later history of the Kadizadeli movement, represented in Crimea and strongly connected with the Ottoman intellectual circles. The research provides an outline of the…

Islam and Muslims in Contemporary Ukraine
Islam in Ukraine has its roots in the Middle Ages and is mostly associated with the Crimean Tatars. Muslims were repressed in the Soviet period, when most of the Tatars were deported from their homeland to Central Asia. Ukrainian independence opened a new era in the development of Islam; the last two decades (1989–2009) were the formative period for Muslim religious institutions. On the basis of the most recent sources, I argue that the Ukrainian…
