A Possible Early Bronze Age Shipwreck at Finike Güvercinada, Antalya
Preliminary Report on the Early Bronze Age Shipwreck in the Kekova Region of Antalya
In 2024, Akdeniz University conducted a study of the Kekova region in the Demre district of Antalya, during which a shipwreck carrying Early Bronze Age amphorae was documented. The visible cargo comprises around amphorae, some of which are broken. Further remains of the shipwreck are likely to be uncovered during planned excavations at present and deeper points on the partially sandy, partially rocky seabed in 2026. The amphorae found in the wrec…

The Excavation at Limyra (Lycia) 2023
Introductory Remarks (M. Seyer)As in the previous years, the research focus in the 2023 season was laid on the urbanistic development of Limyra from the Hellenistic to the Byzantine periods (for a plan of the ancient city: Seyer et al. "The excavation at Limyra (Lycia) 2019," 220, fig. 1). The excavation in the western part of the city was continued as the primary activity. As had already become clear in the previous excavation campaigns, especia…
Rock-Cut Slipways and Slipping Techniques at Dana Island Shipyard
One of the great recent discoveries in maritime archaeology was the discovery, in 2015, of a hitherto unknown shipyard in the Cilicia Region. Approximately 294 slipways/shipsheds were found on Dana Island ( Pitusu-Pityoussa ) in eastern Rough Cilicia ( Cilicia Trachea) , on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Recent studies carried out in 2023 on the island have added to our knowledge of the techniques of landing and servicing vessels, while also …

A new Bronze Age shipwreck with ingots in the west of Antalya—preliminary results
Archaeological underwater investigations in the coast of Mersin and Antalya districts of the Turkish Mediterranean have been carried out with the permission of the Ministry of Culture of Turkish Republic since 1999. Many shipwrecks, sunken settlements, port structures, ancient harbour facilities and other archaeological remains have been documented and lodged in the national archive. The most important discovery within the scope of our study in 2…
Antalya-Kumluca Bronze Age Shipwreck 2019 studies—first analyses
In 2018, a wreck carrying pillow-shaped copper ingots was found off the shores of the Kumluca District of Antalya. This shipwreck, which can be dated to 16th–15th B.C., probably belongs to a merchant vessel that sank as a result of hitting the shore during a storm. Work on the vessel, which sank in ancient Lycia, began in the summer of 2019. A sample of ingots was removed from the shipwreck and one of the ingots was found to be marked for shipmen…
Harbour of Soli-Pompeiopolis
Underwater archaeological work at Soli-Pompeiopolis in 2017 has challenged previously published descriptions of the harbour works. Excavation, sonar survey, and aerial drone survey have provided an asymmetric plan of the harbour moles with an entrance to the east, which reflects local knowledge of the wind and wave conditions. The presence of beachrock blocking the harbour is explained by Beaufort's depiction in 1811–1812 of a defunct sluice, no …
