Reactions to Prayer at Governmental Meetings
An interaction of mean ratings of support and intent to vote for officials between scenarios in which the religion of a government official offering a prayer was experimentally manipulated, and the reported reaction of the community, was related to 64 college women's support and intention to vote for the official. Physicians' Perceptions of Compliance and Attitudes toward Complementary Care
31 surveyed physicians perceived that between one-third and two-thirds of patients do not comply with instructions, and that nearly one-third of those who comply do not show optimal treatment response. The physicians expressed concerns about the validity and cost of complementary approaches that might increase medical compliance and enhance treatment response
Religious Coping, Drinking Motivation, and Sex
The relations for religious coping with types of drinking motivation were examined in 178 college students. Participants completed the Ways of Religious Coping Scale and the Drinking Motives Questionnaire. These relations were more clearly evident among women than among men. Coping…
Assessment of Social Alienation
The psychometric properties of a revision of the Social Alienation from Classmates Scale for college students was examined. A number of constructs, and related measures, have been developed to address estrangement. Consistent with prior research on other measures of estrangement, SACS-R scores were expected to be correlated with scores on tests of depression, stress, introversion, attractiveness, and family functioning. Social Desirability was co…
A Longitudinal Study of Academic and Social Predictors of College Attrition
Examined differences between eventual graduates and eventual dropouts in a longitudinal study of college men. Predictor variables were obtained early in the first year of college and attrition status was assessed after four years. A linear combination of academic ability, family legacy status, specific stress perceptions, and self-perceived social alienation was found to predict attrition status
Childhood Trauma and Current Anxiety among College Men
In an examination of the prevalence and effects of childhood trauma among college freshmen, as expected, the majority of 515 youth reported at least one traumatic experience in childhood. When fear of death or serious injury accompanies a traumatic event, posttraumatic symptoms may be more likely. As hypothesized, scores on the Reaction Index by Frederick were elevated for subjects who reported trauma with concurrent fear. The combination of trau…
Feedback on Ability in Counseling, Self-Efficacy, and Persistence on Task
Self-efficacy in counseling varied with randomly manipulated feedback on ability, such that the 29 college students who received negative feedback on their ability reported lower self-efficacy than those 16 who received positive feedback. Persistence on task, however, was not related to the type of feedback received
