  • The magnetic record of inorganic fly ash deposition in lake sediments and ombrotrophic peats

    Open Access•Frank Oldfield, Sharon Gedye et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Interest in identifying a geological marker signifying the starting point for the Anthropocene has prompted an exploration of the stratigraphic record of inorganic particulates generated by industrial activities. Magnetic measurements of recent lake sediments and ombrotrophic peats are here used to reconstruct the history of deposition of inorganic fly-ash spheres resulting mainly from solid fuel combustion and metal smelting. The chronologies us…

  • Variations in International Understandings of Employability for Geography

Paul Rooney, Pauline Kneale et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 6

This research started from the premise that (a) employability is an internationally accepted concept with a confusion of interpretations and definitions; and (b) that an insight into the variation in understanding of employability and teaching employability would benefit geography curriculum development. Consequently, the views of the co-authors from Italy, the United Kingdom, United States, Chile, Estonia, Greece and Spain were sought to develop…

  • Students' Undergraduate Expectations and Post‐graduation Experiences of the Value of a Degree

Sharon Gedye, ELIZABETH FENDER et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2004•Cited by: 8•References: 4

The internationally shared belief that higher education has a role to play in delivering graduates with an ability to contribute to the knowledge‐based economy is one of the main driving forces behind the 'employability agenda' that has emerged in UK higher education in recent years. For a variety of reasons, including the genuine desire to meet the needs of its graduates, geography is responding to the employability agenda through curriculum cha…

  • Pollen and charcoal in lake sediments compared with historically documented forest fires in southern Switzerland since AD 1920

    Open Access•W Tinner, Marco Conedera et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1998•Cited by: 24•References: 7

Charcoal in unlaminated sediments dated by 210 Pb was analysed by the pollen-slide and thin-section methods. The results were compared with the number and area of forest fires on different spatial scales in the area around Lago di Origlio as listed in the wildfire database of southern Switzerland since AD 1920. The influx of the number of charcoal particles > 75 μm 2 in pollen slides correlates well with the number of annual forest fires recorded…
