Mobility, housing and labour markets in times of economic crises
This special issue addresses the effects of the most recent financial and economic crisis (starting in 2007) on mobility, housing and labour markets, in order to learn some lessons for the future that would enable regions to mitigate the effects of a recession and speed recovery. These empirically based papers cover various different European studies for different regional contexts and scales of analysis (from local to national/international). Of…

Changing commuting patterns in rural metro-adjacent regions
Changing commuting patterns in rural metro-adjacent regions: the case of Castilla-La Mancha in the context of Madrid, Spain. Regional Studies. This paper describes changing commuting patterns within rural regions gradually integrated into metropolitan dynamics and recently reconfigured by state rescaling processes. It focuses on Castilla-La Mancha (Spain), a rural region under Madrilenian influence, between 1981 and 2011. The empirical results sh…
Urban morphological curricula in Spanish schools of architecture
Urban morphological curricula in recently redesigned programmes in all 33 schools of architecture in Spain are examined. In an international context a comparative study is made of different courses using data available on university websites. Urban morphology is present in most compulsory urban studies modules, but these modules are rarely seen as relevant to architectural programmes and only a very few are fully dedicated to the study of urban f…
Beyond the metropolis
Globalization is constituted not only through interurban networks of global city regions, but also by intraurban linkages within city regions. In this article, we use the Madrid city region as a case study to analyze the emergence of new "globalization arenas"—dense agglomeration nodes of knowledge-intensive business services (KIBSs)—on the outskirts of large metropolises (METs). We focus on two distinct types of centers. New employment centers (…

University Students Sharing Flats
This paper presents a study about studentification in a small, compact Spanish city. Unlike most of the previously analysed cases, students of this city share flats instead of living in houses in multiple occupancy. The studentification, which is hardly perceptible in the streets or the neighbourhood, becomes a reality in the staircase community, giving rise to the term ‘vertical studentification’. A survey was conducted amongst university studen…
The high-speed rail challenge for big intermediate cities
Linear Planning and the Automobile
Hilarión González del Castillo (HGC) has made a place for himself in the history of urbanism as propagandist for the Linear City and theoretical town planner. The appearance of the first motorway projects in Spain at the end of the 1920s, inspired him to propose a colonising motorway, that would take advantage of the infrastructure for the construction of linear cities. HGC's proposal had influence in the draft of some of the first Spanish motorw…
Urban Residential Development in Isolated Small Cities That Are Partially Integrated in Metropolitan Areas By High Speed Train
The proliferation of High Speed Trains (HSTs) in European countries has caused small, isolated cities within one hour's distance by HST to become partially integrated into metropolitan processes. These cities may be considered as a combination of small provincial centres and suburban metropolitan districts. Scientific literature suggests that subcentres in polycentric urban regions are becoming more numerous and diverse, that there are doubts whe…
Fluvial Landscapes, Catchment Administration and Land-use Planning
The differences between urban, rural and fluvial landscapes pose challenges for land-use planning. In particular, the stable character of urban settlements and cultural landscapes contrasts with the instability of fluvial ones. In Spain, the administration of fluvial landscapes, via the main legal instrument (the Hydraulic Public Domain) and land-use plans, is conducted on the basis of administrative boundaries which cut across hydrological units…
