  • Resilience or lock-in? Path dependency and structural change after the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake

Open Access•Paolo Bottero, Marco Modica et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2026

Focusing on the devastating 2009 earthquake in L’Aquila (Italy), we investigate how local economies adapt and specialise after disasters. We apply a large-scale synthetic control across multiple indices (specialisation, diversity, complexity) over a long period (2004–20). Results show persistent specialisation and concentration, a halving of diversity, and a delayed decline in complexity, with resilience stemming from the administrative continuit…

  • A world of shocks: Mapping multi-shock and multilayer resilience, assessing resilience markers and drivers

    Giulio Breglia, Marco Modica•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2025•References: 8

This paper examines regional resilience through a multilayer/multi-shock perspective, focusing on the interactions between regions, firms and diverse shocks (economic and environmental). Using a scoping review of 141 papers, we identify resilience markers (outcomes) and drivers (enabling factors) clustered into nine affinity cohorts. Findings highlight the multilayer regional drivers of resilience, the factors shaping heterogeneous responses to g…

  • Learning from the past: A machine-learning approach for predicting the resilience of locked-in regions after a natural shock

    Federico Fantechi, Marco Modica•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2022•References: 1

Italy has been affected by many different shocks in recent years, from the Great Recession to many natural hazards. While many studies have analysed the effects of natural and socio-economic shocks on urbanized and developed areas, very few have focused on locked-in and less developed regions. In this study we focus on the pernicious effects of three earthquakes that have affected the labour markets of rural and inner municipalities of Central It…

  • Near miss’ housing market response to the 2012 northern Italy earthquake: The role of housing quality and risk perception

    Open Access•Marco Modica, Roberto Zoboli et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2021•References: 21

This paper examines the housing market response to the earthquake that hit northern Italy in May 2012. The available literature shows that the average price of houses decreases after a disaster because of the potential underestimation of disaster risk by households, or because of a higher risk perception in reaction to the unforeseen emergency. The physical assessment of the earthquake damage scenario provided in this paper (the so-called macro-s…

  • Industrial resilience, regional diversification and related variety during times of crisis in the US urban–rural context

    Simone Maria Grabner, Marco Modica•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2021•Cited by: 9•References: 5

This paper evaluates the role of related variety in the industrial resilience of US counties against the 2008 economic shock. We use employment data on six-digit industries and measure industrial resilience by the extent to which a county maintained or improved entry rates of new industrial specializations in the post-crisis period of 2009–14 as compared with 2002–07. We find that metropolitan counties are more resilient than other types of areas…

Open Access•Delfina Janiri, Georgios D Kotzalidis et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

To study the long-term psychological effects of Covid-19 disease, we recruited 61 patients older than 60 years of age and administered the Kessler questionnaire K10 to assess psychological distress and classify them according to mental health risk groups. Patients' affective temperaments were assessed with the 39-item form of the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego (TEMPS-A-39) and emotional dysregulation with the Diffic…

  • Creating an Holistic Emergency Alert Management Platform

Ludovico Iovino, Mattia D’Emidio et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Technology•2020

Extreme natural events require effective emergency procedures to minimize adverse effects on a region’s population and economy. Such procedures typically involve the effort of several different teams of first responders (e.g., fire fighters, public administrations, police departments, utility companies), hence coordination is fundamental to the effectiveness of the response to the emergency that must be supported with adequate infrastructures. No…
