  • The Transcripts of the Jafc Trial as an Extended Conversation

    Alexander Nakhimovsky•ARTICLE•East European Jewish Affairs•2018•References: 1

The trial of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (JAFC) lasted many days and resulted in eight volumes of transcripts. It was, in effect, an extended conversation between and among 15 – later 14 – defendants and the presiding judge, with a few minor contributions from the other two judges. This paper proposes to treat the language of that conversation as a linguistic phenomenon, looking for repeating patterns of linguistic behavior that can shed ad…

  • Toward a History of the "Soviet Language" (Sovyaz)

Alexander Nakhimovsky•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•2015

The use of the term "Soviet language" does not signify a commitment to viewing it as a language or a dialect in the linguistic sense. The question of whether SovYaz is, in fact, a social dialect sensu stricto, is beyond the scope of this paper and irrelevant to its purposes, although the m…

  • Lexical Functions and Language Learning

Richard L Leed, Alexander D Nakhimovsky et al.•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•1979

The notion of lexical functions can be used by language teachers to help students learn proper lexical collocations and develop a richer vocabulary.' The notion is taken from the works of I. Mel',uk, A. Zolkovskij, Ju. Apresjan, and their colleagues.2 This article is in three parts: first we present the lexico-syntactic problem facing the student and try to show how the principle of lexical functions relates to it; then we give examples of variou…
