  • Test Instruments

    Open Access•Leslie Grant•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2025

The use of test instruments is frequent in applied linguistics research. This entry describes how test scores or ratings may be used as a variable indicative of language ability, and those scores may be obtained by using established language proficiency measures or assessments created by the researchers. In test design, specifications as well as input, expected responses, and scoring considerations are examined. Issues related to reliability and …

  • Tests

    Open Access•Leslie Grant•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2012

Tests are used in applied linguistics research to measure variables of interest to researchers. A test is “a particular type of measurement that focuses on eliciting a specific sample of performance” (Bachman, 2004, p. 9). Test tasks “elicit performance from which we can make the inferences we want to make” (p. 9). Language ability is one, but not the only, variable of interest in applied linguistics research, and therefore, language testing is a…

  • A teacher-verification study of speaking and writing prototype tasks for a new Toefl

Open Access•Alister Cumming, Leslie Grant et al.•ARTICLE•Language Testing•2004

This study was undertaken, in conjunction with other studies eld-testing prototype tasks for a new TOEFL, to evaluate the content validity, perceived authenticity and educational appropriateness of these prototype tasks. We interviewed seven highly experienced instructors of English as a Second Language (ESL) at three universities, asking them to rate their students’ abilities in English and to review samples of their students’ performance to det…

  • Family Caregiver Satisfaction With the Nursing Home After Placement of a Relative With Dementia

Jane B Tornatore, Leslie Grant et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2004•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Multilevel analysis showed that primary stressors are the strongest predictors of satisfaction. Only one caregiver characteristic (work participation) and one organizational resource (rural/urban location) predict satisfaction. SCU designation was unrelated to satisfaction, perhaps because SCUs have less to offer residents in more advanced as opposed to earlier stages of Alzheimer disease. If family satisfaction is to be achieved, family presence…

  • The Therapeutic Environment Screening Survey for Nursing Homes (Tess-NH)

    Philip D Sloane, C M Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2002•Cited by: 12•References: 2

The TESS-NH efficiently assesses discrete elements of the physical environment and has strong reliability and validity. The SCUEQS provides a quantitative measure of environmental quality in institutional settings

  • Using Computer-Tagged Linguistic Features to Describe L2 Writing Differences

Open Access•Leslie Grant, April Ginther•ARTICLE•Journal of Second Language Writing•2000

  • Testing the language proficiency of bilingual teachers

    Open Access•Leslie Grant•ARTICLE•Language Testing•1997

Currently in the USA, a total of 28 states offer bilingual teacher certification and/or endorsement. Of these states, 17 require that the prospective teachers dem onstrate proficiency in their second language, in English, or in both languages. In the context of nationwide bilingual teacher testing procedures, this article describes a criterion-referenced test for bilingual endorsement used in Arizona. Test scores and questionnaires provided infor…

  • Technologies for Language Assessment

Open Access•Jill Burstein, Lawrence T Frase et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Applied…•1996

Technology continues to move forward with smaller and faster hardware, more efficient software, multimedia capabilities, and universal reach through advanced telecommunications. Evidence for the successful use of technology in education is overwhelming (Kulik 1994, Snow and Mandinach 1991) given that there are reasoned use of that technology—uses that reflect an understanding of what is to be taught and tested. With the above in mind, this paper …
