  • Outlaws and Misfits

    Open Access•Ben Knights•ARTICLE•Modernist Cultures•2019

The images of the writer as exile and outlaw were central to modernism's cultural positioning. As the Scrutiny circle's ‘literary criticism’ became the dominant way of reading in the University English departments and then in the grammar-schools, it took over these outsider images as models for the apprentice-critic. English pedagogy offered students not only an approach to texts, but an implicit identity and affective stance, which combined aler…

  • Pedagogic Criticism

    Open Access•Ben Knights•BOOK•Pedagogic Criticism•2017

This book argues that the history of English Studies is embedded in its classroom practice, and its practice in its history. Some of its foundational struggles are still being lived out today. English

  • Masculinities in dialogue

    Open Access•Ben Knights•ARTICLE•Arts and Humanities in Higher…•2011

This response to the articles by Diana Wallace and Samantha Pinto seeks to locate the negotiation of gendered identities in the classroom within the larger study of the dialogic relations between texts, teachers, and students. The article suggests the continuing cultural and ethical importance of the study of masculinities within textual …

  • Intelligence and Interrogation

    Open Access•Ben Knights•ARTICLE•Arts and Humanities in Higher…•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 11

This article seeks to illuminate a crossover area between subject research and ‘scholarship of teaching’. It proposes that a strategic bridge between discipline as body of knowledge and discipline as pedagogy is the formation and socialization of the student through practices that are at once social, rhetorical, and intellectual. While acknowledging that many current formations are generic, and stem from extra-disciplinary priorities, the article…

  • Group processes in higher education

    Ben Knights•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•1995

Subject specialists have been too dismissive of the experiential dimension of learning, and the advocates of experiential learning have had too little to say about knowledge. This article suggests a possible common ground. Academic subjects are reproduced within the systems of relations established in the classroom, and both students and in the widest sense learning suffer from the replication of taken-for-granted forms of dialogue and exclusion.…
