  • Making Feminist Sense out of ‘Charlie Wilson's War’

    Janet L Larson, Janet Larson•ARTICLE•International Feminist Journal of…•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Charlie Wilson's War (2007), Mike Nichols's film about the womanizing Congressman who engineered black funds for the CIA's proxy war in Soviet-occupied Afghanistan, is historically misleading but highly instructive, because in packaging dominant American masculine identity and war politics as popular entertainment for post-9/11 audiences, it reveals the sexed and gendered 'politics of the visual' in global affairs. This intertextual study of 'Cha…

  • Lessons on Market Revolution: What's a Body to Do? A Series of Personal Dilemmas

J Buss, Janice E Buss et al.•ARTICLE•OAH Magazine of History•2005

One of the greatest difficulties we have in teaching about the market revolution stems from our complete embrace of the claims of our economic system: that the laws of markets are laws of nature, and that capitalistic behavior is human nature. Both of these claims derive from the efforts of Adam Smith and other theorists writing in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to free economic life from controls once imposed by the church, the state, a…

  • The Market Revolution in Early America: An Introduction

    Janet L Larson•ARTICLE•OAH Magazine of History•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 7

For at least a dozen years now historians have talked about a “market revolution” that marked the history of the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century. Charles G. Sellers's book by that name (1991) suggests a particular, synthetic explanation of changes that reshaped American life during the so-called “Age of Jackson”; but other historians, before and since, have used the term a bit more loosely to refer to a host of devel…

Broken Lights , her main contribution to the mid-Victorian Bible wars, went through at least eight editions and, next to her Duties of Women (1881), was the “most successful” of her books ( Life 2: 370). Id…
