Green Nationalism
This article makes the case for integrating elements of ethnosymbolism from Anthony D. Smith in the study of green nationalism. It presents a Smithian critique of Ernest Gellner's theory while accounting for criticisms of ethnosymbolism, partially grounding it in modernist foundations. Gellner's theoretical perspective is undoubtedly valuable, but this article argues that there are benefits in engaging with ethnosymbolism without abandoning moder…
Le Métier du maître de musique d’Église (XVIIe–XVIIIe siècles)
Taking the role of maître de musique d’église (church music master) during early modern France as a subject for detailed investigation, this edited collection asks questions that have hitherto remained relatively unexplored in previous scholarly publications. For example, what duties were expected of such a figure, and how did these vary according to the status and geographical location of the ecclesiastical establishment? What can be known about…
Remplis l’air d’alegresse pour ce seigneur chery des cieux’
Although royal entries have long been studied by scholars, those undertaken by nobles and other political figures have generally attracted less attention. This is particularly true in musicological literature, a fact undoubtedly attributable to the paucity of surviving documentation on this topic. Yet music often played an important part in these spectacles, both by underlining the dignitary’s status and by enhancing key components of the symboli…
Et le roi prit tant plaisir à la musique”
The early modern period is often hailed as a golden age for music-loving monarchs and countless such figures have been extolled for their love of music. Yet can the sources supporting this idea always be accepted literally, or are there extra-musical factors underlying the motivations for these claims? Departing from this question and drawing upon a wide range of documentation—some familiar, some newly presented here—this article centres on Henri…
Historic and future increase in the global land area affected by monthly heat extremes
Climatic warming of about 0.5 ° C in the global mean since the 1970s has strongly increased the occurrence-probability of heat extremes on monthly to seasonal time scales. For the 21st century, climate models predict more substantial warming. Here we show that the multi-model mean of the CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project) climate models accurately reproduces the evolution over time and spatial patterns of the historically observed incr…

The regrets of procrastination in climate policy
Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are projected to impose economic costs due to the associated climate change impacts. Climate change impacts can be reduced by abating CO2 emissions. What would be an economically optimal investment in abating CO2 emissions? Economic models typically suggest that reducing CO2 emissions by roughly ten to twenty per cent relative to business-as-usual would be an economically optimal strategy. The currentl…
