Building Reading Fluency in a Learning‐Disabled Middle School Reader
This case study describes a year‐long, tutorial intervention with a disfluent eighth‐grade reader. Focused instruction, including guided reading at the appropriate instructional level (4th grade), repeated readings, and home tape‐recorder readings, led the student to improve his reading rate by 33% (75 wpm to 100 wpm). Formative and summative evidence is provided, along with both pedagogical and process‐related explanations for the intervention's…
Developmental steps in learning to read
S This study tested a hypothesis about the growth of word knowledge in kindergarten/first‐grade readers. It was predicted that (a) phoneme awareness develops in phases and (b) concept of word in text (ability to finger‐point read) interacts with phoneme awareness in the development of early reading skill. Structural equation modeling showed that the longitudinal data fit the hypothesized model. The data also conformed to the predicted development…
Questions Teachers Ask About Spelling
Questions teachers frequently ask about spelling and spelling instruction, including how students learn to spell and which instructional methods are most effective, are addressed
Factorial and Predictive Validity of First Graders' Scores on the Early Reading Screening Instrument
The factorial and predictive validity of the Early Reading Screening Instrument was examined for 105 first grade students. Analysis indicated that the test is unidimensional and can predict first grade reading skills at the end of the school year with at least a moderate amount of accuracy. A previous study indicated predictive validity coefficients of .66 and .73 when the criteria were word recognition and reading comprehension. The current stud…

Validity and Reliability of the Vowel Matching Test
Validity and reliability evidence is presented for the Vowel Matching Test (VMT), an instrument that measures primary grade children's ability to discriminate medial vowel sounds. The VMT consists of a series of seven picture sets, each set containing a stimulus picture and three item pictures. Based on the responses of 43 first-grade pupils, the results indicated that the VMT correlated .76 with a word recognition test. It exhibited an internal …
