Empirical and theoretical arguments against equating exclamatives and emotive assertions
In their target article entitled “Exclamation, intensity, and emotive assertion,” Trotzke and Giannakidou argue that exclamatives such as German Wie schnell Ada war! ‘How fast Ada was!’ are equivalent to emotive assertions such as Ich bin sehr überrascht, wie schnell Ada war ‘I am very surprised at how fast Ada was.’ This commentary challenges this equation on both empirical and theoretical grounds. Focusing on German, I discuss the external comb…
Emphasizing Writing Acts
This paper is concerned with the interpretation of the exclamation point in German; for example, Es hat geschneit! ‘It has been snowing!’. I argue that the exclamation point contributes a lexical operator for verum at the layer of writing acts. Specifically, it introduces the writer’s wish to ensure the recognition of the writing act in its scope. This lexicon-based proposal builds on a lexicon-based analysis of verum focus. However, while verum …
Coercion by modification — The adaptive capacities of event-sensitive adnominal modifiers
This paper is about coercive meaning adaptions as triggered by modifiers. It pursues two objectives. First, we argue that coercion by modification is rooted in the linguistic system. More specifically, given a pending type-conflict between a modifier and its target, fine-grained lexical typing information is shown to both license and constrain adaptive options. Notably, such a dynamic lexical semantics integrates conceptual knowledge resources in…
"Painting cows" from a type-logical perspective
Depiction verbs such as paint license i(mage)- and p(ortrait)-readings; for instance,Ben painted a cow can convey that Ben produced an image of an unspecific cow or a portrait ofa specific cow. This paper takes issue with a property-based intensional analysis of depictionverbs (Zimmermann, 2006b, 2016) and instead argues for an extensional account. Accordingly, the i-reading is rooted in the introduction of worldly representations by the explicit …
Zur Komposition von insofern als im Deutschen
This paper is about the compositional interpretation of adverbial clauses as introduced by insofern als (lit. ‘insofar as’) in German (= IAs); for example, Die Lösung ist insofern attraktiv, als sie günstig ist . (lit. ‘The solution is insofar attractive as it is cheap.’). I argue that IAs always contribute dimensional restrictions, but do so in two distinct structure-sensitive ways: IAs can be structurally integrated into their host clauses and,…
Composing wie wenn—the semantics of hypothetical comparison clauses in German
This paper addresses the compositional semantics of hypothetical comparison clauses (= HCCs) in German. HCCs are introduced by either wie (‘how’) or als (‘as’); for example, Ben fährt Rad, {wie wenn er betrunken wäre / als wenn er betrunken wäre / als ob er betrunken wäre / als wäre er betrunken} (‘Ben is cycling as if he were drunk’). I argue for the following hypotheses: (i) Based on an explicit conditional antecedent, HCCs license the interpol…
Zur Interpretation adnominaler Genitive bei nominalisierten Infinitiven im Deutschen
The argumental status of verbal participants in event nominalizations is still under debate. Investigating syntactic and semantic properties of referentially interpreted genitive noun phrases related to German nominalized infinitives (= NI), cf. das Stören der Mannschaft (‘the disturbing the team- gen ’), I will argue in favor of different interpretative mechanisms at stake: whereas themes retain their argumental status in the nominal domain, age…
